Or maybe, where would you want to go if you were in my situation? DH and I traveled a TON before DS but have been practically no where with him. He's a fun little guy though and seems to enjoy doing new things so let's go!
I'm open to time of the year though five days travel is probably our max, C is our only child, and money is an object but we don't have to do the cheapest destination. I would prefer to fly I guess and avoid a carseat (using a CARES harness for the plane) so public transportation would be a must. I'm thinking maybe Montreal but never been there. Oh yes, and we live in the South near a huge airport so flights are easy to anywhere. We definitely don't mind doing kid things (parks, playgrounds, hanging out) as opposed to adult things (museums). Thoughts?
Re: JFF - Where should we go?
We did Charleston, SC and Hilton Head last summer. It was a blast-O loved the beach.
I have friends that live in the Augusta, GA area, so we have visited them and done day trips to the ATL aquarium and such.
We live in NE and have done things like trips to Boston, Maine, NH as well as Mystic Aquarium, etc.
I loved visitng Montreal-I did it when I was single though so I cannot speak for the kids scene.
We are doing Clearwater Beach FL in March!!
If he hasn't been to the beach yet, I'd highly recommend it! We went to the Outer Banks this summer and M had SO much fun jumping the waves and playing in the sand. I think when he is a bit older he'll enjoy the outdoorsy stuff more (the mountains, waterfalls, etc.)
You seem too travel-savvy to consider Disney, but you'll get the warm weather and lots to look at if you consider it
I think a kid would love a resort type place with a beach, like the Bahamas or something. I would also appreciate being in one place with a two year old, but your suggestions make it seem like you would rather sightsee?
I loved Montreal and Quebec City when we went for our Honeymoon, but "stroller friendly" are not two words that come to mind!
What would you think about Vegas? There's a lot for kids to do there actually!
Disney World all the way! We're huge DW freaks in this house and have gone every year for the last 10 years...plus all the times I have been with my family, prior to DH. There is a ton to see and I think your LO would love it. Every year, around Mayish, they offer the free Disney Dining plan if you stay in the park and purchase park tickets. It's a great buy and sooo worth it. They give you more than enough food and the best part is that it's free! So, you will probably save $800 or more for a week (Disney restaurants can get pricey otherwise). Anyway, enough of my rambling. If you decide to go to DW, let me know...I'll give you all the inside secrets.
P.S. You'd have to take me as well. hehe
Thanks all for the good ideas! And yes, we're probably do enjoy sightseeing more. None of us, particular C, are particularly good at slowing down, ha ha! I'd love to do Disney but may wait another year or two? I want him to love it and right now he think Mickey Mouse is the costume his friend wore for Halloween.
Okay, I'll check out Chicago, Boston, and Montreal probably. Letranger, Philly was one of our last stops, pre-C, love it!
And mamaholmes, I'm in Atl, so good tip on the aquarium!
If you check out Chicago, I'd recommend staying here:

They're reasonable, in the heart of everything and all the rooms are suites so you can put C to bed and then still hang out in the living room. This is where we always stayed when I was a kid and my family would come into the city (before I lived here).
Thanks! And agreed, after our trip with C to the beach, I learned that a suite really is crucial!
If you're in Atlanta - have you been to the Center for Puppetry Arts? I've gone a few times pre-kid and it's been a few years, but it was pretty nifty as an adult.
It doesn't meet your no car seat requirement, but a few years ago my friends stayed at a sort of Eco-tourism farm/resort on the NH/MA border with their 2 and 4 yos and loved it. There were activities for the kids, a playground and sandbox, and easy hiking nearby. If you guys like the outdoors, it's something to keep in mind for another trip.

I have! I loved it as a kid. I think C will probably love it in another year or two, and I can't wait to take him. Thanks for the tip about the eco-resort. That's probably something we would enjoy, and DH's been to NH and loves it.
Our travel style tends to be LAZY, so we tend to go places where we don't have to think or plan too much like the beach or Disney. So probably not up your alley...
...But one of the coolest vacations I've been on was to Santa Fe and Taos, NM. There are tons of things to do in both towns and the surrounding areas, so your vacation can be as active or as relaxed as you want it to be. We spent a week when we went so we had enough time to hike up a mountain, go horseback riding, sightseeing and shopping...but still spent half of the vacation drinking beer and just enjoying the scenery around our cabin. We haven't been since we've had DS, but our nephews go every year and have a blast, so I am sure C would have fun too. From atl, you'd probably fly into Albuquerque, but it's not a bad drive to Santa Fe or Taos from there. (And ABQs probably fun too, but we didn't have time to see it all).
GL planning your trip! We'll probably only make it to the beach this year (and Disney), but I can't wait until we can afford a bigger travel budget.
