2nd Trimester

Bad Migraines !

Atleast 3 days out of the week I wake up with THROBBING, Intense Migraines. I Can't have lights on or look at the TV, Noise Kills Me and I can't hold Anything down. It's hard to sleep since the pain is so Painful. I also have a 3 year old, and as mothers know there is no "Sick days" for moms so laying down in a dark room and trying to sleep it off just isn't an option. They are really starting to make me miserable, does anybody know what else I can do to ease these ? My doctor says Tylenol every 4 house but I can't keep it down longer than 5 minutes so that doesn't work.. Ice works for about 10 minutes...I'm just hoping there's SOMETHING I can do ....

Re: Bad Migraines !

  • I've gotten them my whole life and some caffeine before it hits full on has always helped me. I usually had like a monster but now that I've been having so little caffeine a cup of coffee has the same effect.

  • I was told once 2nd tri hits I can have something else other than Tylenol. I'm about to call the doctor. I haven't had as debilitating ones as usual, but I totally understand. Feel better!

  • Try head on, it is at the drugstore. It actually works.

I second the caffeine idea. I have never had migraines until this pregnancy (not even with my first) and I've tried everything. I find that if I drink a cup of coffee first thing and then have a coke mid day that it at least is manageable. My MW gave me a prescription strength tylenol and that doesn't touch it. However, if I take 3 tylenol with the coffee then that seems to be the concoction that works for me. Hang in there! You can try massage, swimming and chiropractic care too.

  • I've been getting them my entire pregnancy and told my doctor i could no longer function.  They prescribed me something that is considered safe in pregnancy...so there are options out there.  Would talk to your doc.

  • I have gotten migraines since my 11 yr old daughter was 4 mos old. I take excedrine migraine for mine in conjunction with an ice pack on my head for 20-30 mins. Excedrine has the same main ingredient as Tylenol pus caffeine and it seems to work for me. My doctor said its fine, but before you try anything OTC I would consult the doctor first because everyone is different.

  • I have been getting bad headaches my entire 2nd trimester. Same as you, like 3 days a week.  They have been getting better as of late, now I just get them on the weekends.  Caffeine helped for me, in the mornings, somewhat, but in the afternoons did not help at all.  My doctor prescribed tylenol with codeine and I went to a headache specialist who gave me shots of magnesium.   Neck massages also help as do warm showers ... but just a little bit...

I would just keep telling your doctor that the headaches don't go away.  So sorry you are going through this!

  • I battled migraines prior to pregnancy and was ok during my 1st trimester. They came back in my 2nd trimester and I was horribly sick w. vomiting. My doctor prescribed Fiorecet. The migraines aren't the problem necessarily he said, but the vomiting can cause complications w. both you and the baby. You need a combined approach w. migraines- an ice pack, dark room, medication, a bit of caffeine and sleep. I try to have a small amount of caffeine daily- either a soda or small cup of coffee. Women that have migraines around their periods are also more susceptible to having episodes during pregnancy because of the hormone fluctuations. Hope you feel better!

This is misleading.  Yes, it has acetaminophen (Tylenol) but it also has an equal amount of aspirin, which is not recommended in pregnancy.

  • I am with you on this. I have been having awful headaches during my pregnancy. My doc told me to take a Tylenol and if that doesn't help take two pills. I am trying to survive without but some days have been unbearable. I usually take the two pills with a coke or a coffee and the pain usually subsides to a manageable level.

    Good luck!

  • Eff that and go to urgent care! You can get an IV med if needed and anti-nausea meds to keep down something that will help. I get migraines too and I'm about to scream at people who tell me to take it easy and take Tylenol. Those people have clearly never had migraines.

I also do caffeine (I do Excedrin Migraine when not pregnant, can't take now because of aspirin so I drink coffee) and put an ice pack on my forehead at the same time as a heating pad on my neck. It sucks though and I have a 2 year old so I feel you! I get problems with my speech as well as vision problems when I have migraines too, like I'm having a stroke. They're brutal!

Don't give up until you find a doctor who will actually treat you. Tylenol for a 3 day migraine is neglectful on their part.

  • Thank you everyone! I have a doctors apt on Tuesday so I'm going to try to explain it alot more to her in person. It's just too much to bare sometimes, so maybe she will prescribe me something thats safe to take during the rest of my pregnancy (I'm 15 wks) .. I took note of a couple meds you have all mentioned so ill ask her about those. :)
