NBR SIL Vent

So last year DH and I had told SIL that we were planning on doing a suprise anniversary party for their parents. She said that her parents hated stuff like that...but we told her it's fine, we'll invite all their friends and family and even ones from out of state and it'll be good.

Well next thing we know about a month later SIL tells us of an idea she came up with...a suprise birthday party for their parents and she said she was planning on inviting friends and family out of state.

WTH?

So DH of course tells her that that was basically our idea...

SIL then goes on to say that she 'forgot' but that we can help her with the suprise birthday thing. Their birthdays (they are 2 days apart)  are before the anniversary so SIL won out on that one, so DH says that will be fine. We'd love to be a part of it because essentially it was our idea.

So guess what? SIL sent out a Save the Date for the party today and it had tons of information in it that she never told us about and apparantly everything is already planned out. I mean really?

So I am debating on how I should respond to her email...any ideas?

She irritates me. This is the same SIL who competes with DH on EVERYTHING. She even had her parents reschedule Thanksgiving for her since she was pregnant and 'wasn't sure how she'd be feeling'. Needless to say we did not attend. She also has her mom go over to her house once or twice a week to take care of her newborn baby so she can rest....all day long. I understand a few hours here and there...but all day? Spoiled much?

I was going to write something along the lines of, it looks like you've got everything covered, DH and I will be pulling out of the planning and organizing since you've got it all figured out.

I want to write something snarky but don't know how to make it come off as not so mean...but secretly it is. I know, I am mean...but she's a brat.

Re: NBR SIL Vent

  • Well, I've been in a "mood" lately so I would write exactly what you said.  But I honestly don't give a mouse's behind what my sibilings or BIL think of me.  I hate when people are competitive like this.

I say go for the snark and don't worry if it comes across as mean.  I may even let it slip that you had starting working on a surprise party for the anniversary (at the birthday party) before this was planned...

    God, I'm a bisch...

  • After it's over I would ask inlaws what they want for their anniversary.  I expect that you were going to spend on their party, so I would take that amount and present them with three choices - DH would do this -  (something like a weekend getaway to a local resort, a prty with their friends, other things they would like. I would include a weekend away with your family only and let them know that you are so excited that they enjoyed the surprise birthday parties but that since that was what you guys had talked with SIL about for their anniversary...they know their daughter and will see it - and then you guys can get them something awesome with no risk that SIL will one up you or taint it). But I am all about excluding people that suck all the fun out of things however I can.

  • I'm going to go the other way, ask for the info and then go as a guest.  She's planning everything and has it covered, let it be.  Whatever financial resources you were going to put into the party yourself use to buy them an amazing gift.

She is defintely seems like she's trying to one up you.  Being upset is understandable.  But she sounds pretty selfish is being snarky really going to help things?  Don't stoop to her level.  Your better than that!

    It's really about your ILs.
