Spending Freeze/2013 Financial Goals

I'm going to try. I'd like to save 3k between the first of February and the end of March. I could probably do more, but I have a few big things and some doctor bills that I had to budget for already. To help this goal, I'm going to cut out nonclient related lunches out of the office, new clothes, Starbucks, and any frivolous shiit that I spend money on. I have two small school loans that I want to pay off before the summer, so I'm going to use this money and our tax return to knock those out.

Does anyone else have money goals for the year?

Re: Spending Freeze/2013 Financial Goals

  • We have a goal to save at least 30K this year. We have just been hemorraging money on crap (okay mainly expensive clothes for DS Embarrassed). I am paying off the christmas CC bill this month and then after that entering major savings mode.

  • We are going on vacation at the beginning of February. We have almost all our medical bills paid off so I am hoping to have that done before tax time then use our taxes to pay off a credit card that the highest balance. I've stopped using our credit cards and am helping out with my brothers new business for some extra cash. I really need to stop buying clothes and we need to stop eating out. I've cut back but we need to really slow it down.

Good for you guys! We hemorrhaged money during and after our move. I think we could probably do 18k this year if we have no more disasters/moves. I'd like to do more, but I don't want to set my sights too high and then disappoint myself later on. I also want a little bit of wiggle room for some new summer work clothes.

  • 30K Kari - you go girl!

I am saving for our vacation in February, and I also need to save some money now because I have two big weddings coming up this year (one being my sister's) so I need to save for her shower, bachelorette, my MOH dress, etc.

  • We have a pretty good sized saving account but there is so much I want to do with it.  New driveway, new auto, a fence, bathroom remodels(3), new windows, landscaping, vacations. What seemed like a lot really is not that much for everything I want.  On top of that, we would like to have 40k in savings for when we start the big kitchen remodel.  I want my whole house done by the spring of 2019 for Oliver's graduation party.  I want to do it without any loans.

We are tackling Oliver's bathroom this winter and I think we can do the whole thing(our labor) for under 3k.  If we hired labor we are looking at 3k for just the shower.

Dammit. I forgot about the fence. We have to get our yard fenced in this spring for our poor pup. I'm going to cross my fingers for that elusive bonus in April so that I can just use it on the fence. I really want to do some house projects, too. Ugh. Someone might need to restrain me!

Ha yeah, I don't think DH is too enthused lol. He just keeps complaining about us not owning a house and I told him we need to get serious on DP money if we really want to buy. I feel like I do better when I set my sights high. I am an all or nothing kind of gal.

    Good luck on your goal!

  • I saved 45k last year including 401k, 529 plan, etc. DH probably saved 10k. I doubt I'll be able to do any more than that given we have 2 on the way and we are committed to doing some much needed landscaping.

  • I feel like we've been on a spending freeze since 1987...I'm so over it!  The good thing is that we will be paying off our house in July and hopefully getting a new car before the end of 2013.  MH despises being in any kind of debt.

I've become so accustomed to being a tight azz, I'm not sure if I can go back to our old frivolous ways.

Wow not having a mortgage will be huge! We refinanced to a 15 year last year and plan to have it paid off in 10 more years. I hate debt too!

  • We're starting to look for a house, so that will wipe out our savings (which has been earmarked for the down payment for years, so it hasn't been touched).  But DH just got the LTO for the rest of the school year and I got the part time job that should mean ~$1000/month.  My goal is to live off of DH's salary, plus squirrel some of it away for the summer months when we're not teaching and September when there's usually less substitute work available (and the new baby is due).  That means that the money from my pt job and any subbing I do from April-June can go towards buying the house, moving, etc.  I also want to double what we're putting into the RESP (we're currently putting in $25 every two weeks, I think) for Lily (and future kids, since it's a family plan).

We already do pretty well at not spending money.  I'm still getting better at meal planning based on what's on sale that week and stuff, and we do occasionally go out for meals but it's such a rare treat that I don't think I want to cut down anymore.

  • We are hoping to do a small addition on our house within the next year or so. Just adding two bedrooms and a laundry room, and knocking down the wall between our livingroom and bedroom to make it bigger. We have a good chunk of money saved so far but we are definitely going to need more. Plus I don't want to entirely wipe out our savings with the addition. I'm hoping to put a minimum of $1000 away each month, but will try for more if possible. It's hard with one income, but we should be able to swing it.
