Pregnant after 35

lurker looking for spotting success stories

Hello ladies,

Some of you might remember me from TTC35+.  I am in a bit of a no-man's land -- I had a positive beta that increased, but my RE doesn't do anything else until 7 weeks, when he does an ultrasound.   So, I haven't made an official intro over here yet.

I am 6 weeks, 2 days today and just started spotting...well, I want to call it spotting, but it is more like light flow from a period.  I just called my RE and am waiting to hear back.  In the meantime, does anyone have any encouraging stories?  To be honest, I am a little freaked out, even though the rational side of me says that this is probably just the Endometrin.

Thanks in advance, and I hope to join you -- for real -- soon!

Re: lurker looking for spotting success stories

  • I had spotting throughout my first trimester...starting at about 6 weeks.  There is a good chance it it implementation bleeding...that is what i was for me.  It came along with awful cramps so i was a freaked out mess, but it turned out to be normal.  My doctor told me that if it became enough to fill up a pad within an hour, i should call back or go to the ER.  It never got that bad...was very, very light.  So keep that in mind and hopefully it will ease your mind.  Good luck to you!!!

  • I woke up one morning to some heavy bleeding at 19 weeks. (bled through my PJ bottoms) My biggest fear what that no baby could survive that much bleeding.  I headed to the ER where the ultra-sound showed my very healthy baby boy bouncing around :)   To this day they are not sure what caused the bleeding since I did not have any trauma.

I will say a prayer for your little bean!

  • A lot of my friends had spotting throughout their first trimester. My sister did, too. They key is how much bleeding (the usual consideration is if you can soak a pad in an hour) and the colour.

By comparison, when I miscarried, there was no warning. I was literally picking up my progesterone suppositories at 12pm from the employee pharmacy across the hospital, and by the time I got back to my unit (20 minutes total, round trip), I had period-level cramping and was starting a heavy flow. There was no doubt in my mind about it-- it was clearly not spotting.

Everyone I know who experienced spotting freaked a little (how could you not?) but they never soaked a pad. And that really is key.

On another note-- I will be doing the happiest dance when you join us! Hang in there; less than a week until your 7 week U/S!

  • I had spotting from a few days after ovulation until just this week, so almost 5 weeks straight.  Some days it was very light, faint pink, and only when I wiped, others it was bright red and just a little flow in the toilet and showing on panty liners in between bathroom trips.  My doctor was unconcerned and said not to worry unless the flow became period-like and was accompanied by painful cramping.  He said that the placenta doesn't really take over until around week 8 or so, meaning that until then, the baby is still sort of 'burrowing' into your uterus lining and spotting/bleeding can come from that...he likened it to prolonged implantation bleeding.  And he said that many women just spot.  I tend to spot a lot during my cycles already, my three TTC cycles before my BFP I spotted pretty much my whole LP, and even back when I was on the pill I would spot a lot from midcycle until AF started.

  • I had spotting at 6 weeks.  It was 4 days before my first ultrasound.  It was from the endomentrium.  I changed my insertion angle and that was enough to irritate my cervix.

  • I had spotting several times during weeks 5 to 7 and it ranged from brown to bright red. I was also on endometrin and I think that really irritated my cervix. I hope everything turns out well for you and congratulations!

  • Congratulations!

Lurking and saw this. Yes, I had it from before my BFP, then it went away a bit (I was on vaginal Prometrium twice a day), then came back. Brown and red. Both my RE and two OB's, never could understand it, my cervix looked normal, etc.

It was super scary but all was well. I hope the same for you!

  • As pp's said, it can be totally just unexplained, I haven't had great experiences with spotting but there are plenty of ladies who just have it happen randomly.

    Congrats and best of luck!!!

  • I had spotting/bleeding at around 8 weeks when pregnant with my son who will be 13 in 3 days. I was freaking out at the time.

  • Hello,

I am 8 weeks today and can tell you that I started spotting around 6 weeks and kind of freaked out.  I had not yet been to the doctor (other than the first blood test to confirm the pregnancy).  I called the triage nurse in my OB office and she asked if I'd had intercourse in the past 24 hrs.  We had...she said that could cause the spotting.  She recommended we not have more sex until after the spotting ended but said it is safe.  Over the next week, I had spotting on 4 or 5 days (always after intercourse but once when we didn't...the spotting would last 2 days sometimes).  I had my first OB appointment yesterday and was told that it's not uncommon and not to worry.  It was recommended that we use a condom as apparently there is something in semen that can cause the spotting.  If you are concerned about the spotting, they can do a blood test to check your HCG level to ensure you are where you should be.  I was told that as long as it wasn't so heavy as to fill a pad in an hour and as long as there was not substantial cramping (a little cramping is okay) that it's okay.  Still...I know it's kind of nerve wrecking when you start spotting but for me everything is still okay at this point.  Good luck to you!
