Update on Ds

The advisor called me back yesterday evening and cleared somethings up. He was not switched and did reassure me that they can not do that without having a meeting with me. I'm glad that was just a misunderstanding. The health class is mainstream. He does however receive assistance but he has an aid with most of his classes which he is used to and I am aware of this. The teacher does give him extra attention and we think that's why he formed this opinion. As for him knowing the "R" word, well unless he tells us, we just don't know where it came from. The advisor did try to chat with him after school in a subtle way and he was pretty tight lipped. The only thing we can do is try to keep an open line of communication with him and school. I talked with Dh last night and we will just look close to see if we see any changes in his demeanor. I did forget to ask if my concerns and our conversation will be documented. Does anyone know if that's protocol? Thanks again for the support, you guys really are a huge help.

Re: Update on Ds

  • Glad you got some info. As for the R word. There are lots of words that get tossed around at school. Probably somewhere in his school time he has been called it : or heard it around. I wouldn't be too worried about it unless you get DS to speak up.

  • Again, glad to hear you received a solid explanation from the school.  My sister has had some trouble in HS (she is a senior this year) and it made a world of difference for my parents to stay connected to her guidance counselors and teachers.

  • I'm glad you got things figured out about the health class. I'm in agreement with everyone else about the "r" word. Kids that age can be brutal. They're insecure about themselves, therefore pick on each other. You're a great mom. And you're doing the right thing with open communication.

  • I'm glad you were able to clear things up - I'm sorry you didn't get all the answers you were looking for, though.

  • It sounds like his advisor is on the ball and so I'm guessing he/she documented it. If it was me I certainly would have. I make a point to document everything especially conversations with parents and other staff members. You just never know when you'll need to refer to past incidences.

I'm really happy that the main issue has been sorted out. So much of this business is clear as mud and it can be so frustrating and time consuming to make it make sense.

  • It sounds like the school is taking it seriously, which is great!
