Beauty products

I basically stopped my normal beauty routine as soon as I learned that I was pregnant because I wasn't sure what was safe to use.  My skin has been very dull and dry lately so I kind of want to start up again.  I've been on Google, but I'm not really finding anything too specific, so I was wondering if any of you have any input.

I know I should generally avoid sulfates, which I was doing pre-pregnancy as well.  Google also tells me phthalates, but most brands don't advertise those types of chemicals.  I wouldn't have the slightest idea of what products to stay away from, aside from perfumes.

I used to use Strivectin cream and another manuka honey cream on my face.  I stopped using both.  The manuka honey cream specifically said not to use while pregnant, but is Strivectin safe?

I also used to use Philosophy's Triple Acid Brightening Peel, but stopped using that as well.  Would something like that be safe?

I know I should stay away from nail polishes with chemicals also, so I've switched to the Butter brand.  Does anyone know of a good, safe nail polish remover?

Re: Beauty products

  • My OB and all their paperwork specifically said regular beauty routines were fine to continue. That said, if a product specifically said to not use during pregnancy, I wouldn't use it.

As for a nail polish remover, I have one without acetone and I just make sure to use it in a well-ventilated place. Your body absorbs so little, I can't imagine it's dangerous.

  • For skincare you should try Boscia, it's safe for pregnancy and was specifically created for that.

Not sure about a nailpolish remover though.

  • As long as your not drinking nail polish remover, your good.

  • If you want more info about the level of evidence behind the safety of various product ingredients, Skin Deep is a database set up by the Environmental Working Group that might be helpful. They have a mom/baby section that could be a good place to start.

  • Don't overthink it, truly.

I have never been big on the "beauty routine". I use the apricot scrub on my face and then dove. If I have an oily day I use a dab of tea tree oil on a cotton swab on my face.

My make up is simple-- mostly BB cream and some eyeshadow with mascara. I use lip balm or lip stain.

My doctor said that most beauty routines can continue as well.
