D@mn you Dtap Vax!

My poor kid's leg is crazy swollen :(  Last night it looked like there was a baseball under his leg.  It's bright red and hot to the touch. 

I called the on-call nurse, who said it was normal, give it 3 days, and if it doesn't improve, then get him seen by a doctor.  Apparently the 4th or 5th instance of this vax can cause the swelling.  Keeping him on Advil for now, it doesn't seem to be hurting him, but he is acting like it's irritating him, or he knows something is different.

Scared about 10 years off of my life when I saw it though.

    DD2 had a similar reaction to the MMR at 12 months and DTaP at 15 months. I usually looks better by day 3, but if it's bothering him don't hesitate to give him tylenol or try a cool cloth or cold pack on the lump. I hope it clears up soon!

    Poor guy. This happens to A when he gets this vaccine. It is usually much better in 2-3 days.

    That would scare me.  Glad they said it is relatively normal.  Hope it goes down in the time they say it should.  Poor kid.

    Poor guy!  I would have been freaked out as well.  B had a reaction but not nearly as large of a bump.  It did take almost a week to go away fully though if I remember correctly.

    That must have been the same vaccine that made Alissa's arm swell, although hers wasn't as bad. Our new pedi did he shots in her arm this time, they said with all the walking they do now that doing them in leg could make them more sore/bruised.

    Oh my gosh -- that would take 10 years off my life too! Glad it sounds like he's not bothered by it -- I hope the swelling & redness go down quickly!

    Poor little guy. Glad to hear it's nothing bad. Have you tried a cool cloth or cold pack? I swell up like that with some vaccines and it is always so scary when you first notice it.

    We didn't, because we didn't see it until bedtime last night (and daycare said it was normal during the day).  I didn't want him staying up any later (he was already 20 minutes after bedtime by the time I talked to the nurse).  If it's still swollen tonight I'll try, but I doubt he'll let me.  He doesn't let me anytime he bumps his head or anything either.

    Oh my! Hope it's gets better soon. 

    Is that why they say to massage the injection sight?

    I knwo this is soo late, but I am so sorry for J!

    I hope the swelling is going down! If it helps, Bo was swollen for 3 days too! His injection sight was not as red...but you could feel and see the swelling.
