NoI'mNotMarried- I like you too Wink

What I meant was, if I meet someone, say a new hire at my company, or a friend of a friend, and we go to lunch, and in the car they say "do you mind if I smoke"...it just makes me... lose respect for that person.  But I would think the same thing if someone wanted to freebase some heroin also!  It's just soooo bad for you, and everyone now KNOWS how bad it is, so why would you start doing that?  Or continue doing it?  It really makes me lose respect for that person.  And think that they aren't as cool as I thought they were.

But I never started smoking in high school, it just ever appealed to me.  I smoked pot occasionally through high school and college, like once every few months.  And I'm a drinker.  I just think it's terrible to do something like that to your body, and people around you, when we all KNOW exactly what the side effects are.  Marathon running or over eating won't kill your spouse from the side effects of your habit.  Smoking will and does.

you lose respect for people who smoke cigarettes but YOU smoked pot.  me thinks your logic is flawed there, my dear.

  • what my comment said at the bottom is: you lose respect for people who smoke, yet YOU smoked pot.  me thinks your logic is flawed my dear.

Did I miss something?  That seemed entirely random.  Funny, but random.

  • Sh!t.  My kid is SCREWED on the fat genes part.

I don't smoke, have never smoked pot, and if I don't want to be around people who smoke, I go inside.  Kind of feel like it's a choice we have now that it's banned in so many places.

That's REALLY old drama - The_Jen was freaking out because she didn't want her baby to end up fat like her husband.  (her words not mine)

Okay then.  Thank you for catching me up on that.

  • Oh well, looks like we disagree again.  In Oregon you can still smoke pretty much eveywhere (until January 09, so not much longer) and it's disgusting to not be able to walk into a bar without reeking of smoke.

And I don't see the correlation between occasional pot smoking and being addicted to cigarettes...but whatever!

  • You can not compare occasionally smoking pot to smoking cigs everyday. Especially those who smoke a pack a day.

    That is rediculous.

I totall agree with her. Especially parents that smoke. You KNOW its going to harm you/your kids.

Ironically, I attended an appointment with a lawyer today with a friend of mine, and the lawyer actually lit up in his office. Nice.

  • Some people feel that there is a big difference between smoking cigarettes and smoking marijuana. There's the whole debate on whether or not weed is addictive and whether the effects of it are really as bad as certain legal drugs, like cigarettes and alcohol.

Yeah, me either.  One is legal and one isn't.  I judge those who commit crimes much more harshly.

  • Actually Adamwife, it was that everone in his family is very big and has health problems from their lack of diet/exercise/nutrition, and I wanted to counteract that.

But I'm sure if 6 fingered hands ran on your DH's family, and you knew about it, you would just be ok with it and not try and figure out how to deal with it before you had kids with him and his family's genes.

So being overweight is the equivalent of having an extra finger?  Hmmmm.....that's a new one.

Actually, obesity runs on my mom's side of the family and I'm not worried one bit about it.  I plan on teaching my children about healthy eating and exercise.

If I remember correctly it was keeping you up at night.

  • LOL!  Last time I checked no one was put in prison for smoking/selling cigarettes nor ODing from smoking it too much in one day so I don't get the cigarettes = heroin thing....I do know plenty of people who are addicted to pot & had no problem risking my life/future (because it's illegal) by lighting up a joint or growing pot in my shared house, in my car or wherever.  I had plenty of fights w/ my pothead friends back in the day--LOL!

  • the cigarettes vs. pot debate never ceases to make me lol uncontrollably.  anyone who has smoked cigarettes and pot can tell you that pot smoke is much, much harsher on one's lungs than cigarette smoke is.  occasional or not, i don't need to see a study to know that it is far from harmless.  The_Jen, what i don't understand is how you are a position to judge a cigarette smoker (most of whom become addicted after trying cigarettes a few times) for making a bad decision and becoming addicted, when you make the bad decision to smoke pot and drink alcohol.  does that make you stupid?  there is a difference between making unwise decisions and having a low IQ.

a good friend of ours died at 45 from a very aggressive form of lung cancer.  he was not a cigarette smoker, he was a pot smoker.  i also had an uncle who died of liver cancer, and he was a drinker.  if it's okay to think someone is stupid for making bad health decisions, then why are drinkers and pot smokers not stupid like cigarette smokers are?

one is legal and one isn't.  one impairs your faculties and one doesn't.  losing respect because someone smokes cigarettes makes you look like a stuck up a$$.  I lose respect for people who make inane comments about fat babies.

  • Ok, I was totally with you until fat = birth defect.  THAT's f-ing stupid.

  • 1.  I never made ANY comments about fat babies.

    2. I can judge people for smoking cigs, and they can judge me for occasional pot smoking, or drinking a glass of wine with dinner, or wanting jello shots at a baby shower, or using disposable diapers, of formula feeding.  Whatever, everyone judges each other!  I just think smoking is uber gross and stinky, and yes, I judge people that smoke!

My old company used to have it this way, granted this was the same company that had a liquor cabinet that was restoked every monday (I know this bc I was AP and had to pay the AMex bill) the CEO of our company request "special brownies for holiday parties" on top of asking for all bud smokers to meet out back. So I believe smoking int he office was the least of their issues at a company. Cool

Wow, I'm way late on this, but I had to comment because it pissed me off.

My husband was born without one of his hands. We don't know why, and therre is a possibilty that our children could also be born with affected limbs. I've been placed in a high risk category for genetic abnormalities.

I don't think comparing obesity to a birth defect is even close to right. I find your comment incredibly douchey. Especially since you mentioned that your husband's family's health problems are caused by their poor diet and lack of excercise, both of which can easily be corrected.

  • Ya know, I get really tired of people that try and justify their use of illegal drugs.  Um, can you say pathetic?!  Smoking, drinking, and pot are all harmful to the human body.  It's not rocket science----everyone knows someone who has seriously harmed their own life and/or someone else's life by doing one or all of them.  DUH.
  • I think there is a difference between smoking pot socially on occasion, and lighting up a cigarette with a person you barely know in a public venue.  The_Jen admitted to smoking pot in college, she probably did it with a group of her friends who were doing it also, however, when you are out to lunch with an aquaintence that does not smoke and choose to smoke, it's really inconsiderate.  I would be judgemental also, but I've never done pot so maybe my view is different.

I completely agree with Hi725.  Poor health due to diet and exercise cannot in any way be compared with a genetic abnormality like polydectality or limb abnormality.   That's just ignorant.
