Turning into a hermit

Hi..I am 17 weeks pregnant with my 1st child. I recently quit my job(due to morning sickness and my job is very physical) I was planning on being a stay at home mom anyways. So I got flu shot a while ago. But lately all I see on the news is how bad the flu is this year and I am so scared to go anywhere. I have always(before pregnant) been a bit of a germaphobe(a joke with my friends and family) but it's getting so bad now that I am pregnant. I find myself not wanting to go out with friends for lunch or get togethers-so afraid I will catch something esp. the flu. Does anyone else feel this way? Or am I being a little crazy?

Re: Turning into a hermit

  • Nope, you're not crazy! I've been avoiding the public as well, even though I had the flu shot. I wash my hands like a crazy woman & bought a econo-sized bottle of hand sanitizer from Sam's Club! Trust your instincts- this year is so bad, it's not worth getting sick, but, don't drive yourself crazy, either! Get out & get fresh air once in a while Smile

  • You definitely are not crazy, nor are you the only one. My DD has been sick for a month with all kinds of different viruses, and it has made me want to turn into a hermit. No matter how much cleaning I do, she is still getting sick. So for the past week we've literally stayed in. She of course now has a stomach bug which I think she picked up from the Doctors office on Monday. But I'm petrified to go anywhere. I had to go to the ER the other night and wait in the waiting room FULL of other sickies and wrapped my scarf completely around my face and head and kept using my antibacterial gel. I am just so afraid to get this flu. Praying tomorrow I am finally well enough to go get the shot!
Married my BEST FRIEND on December 1, 2007. Started TTC in March 2008. Found out we were expecting our first child in October 2008 - but had a m/c in December 2008 - resulting in a d&e. Met with a RE in May 2009 and set a plan - but conceived unexpectedly on our own! Our precious little Sophia was born on February 9, 2010! Lilypie Third Birthday tickers

  • Honestly, it's a little crazy Smile. But maybe think about places you can go that aren't super-populated? For instance, go take a walk or do things outside, instead of going to a crowded mall. Host movie night at your house instead of going to the theater. Or go out to dinner on a weeknight when the restaurant isn't crowded. That way, you won't be cut off from the world, but you also won't be in situations where you feel really uncomfortable.

Be sensible about washing your hands, don't touch your face, and stay hydrated. If you DO get the flu, it'll suck, but if you're watching out and aware of symptoms, you can get care quickly and early, and you'll be fine.

  • Honestly, this doesn't sound healthy. While I wouldn't be hanging around at the local Minute Clinic, it sounds like this issue goes a little further than "normal" cautiousness. Perhaps you should consider speaking with someone. You should not be scared to leave your home, and you can't be very happy feeling trapped at home all the time. It sounds like anxiety or OCD or something that should maybe be addressed by a specialist. I personally would get really depressed if I were at home all the time.

  • I do leave my house. I do errands and go to the store/shop. I am just avoiding crowded areas at the moment. I keep geting invited to go to large gatherings-at bars-which I just don't feel comfortable going being prego.
  • There is nothing  wrong with you so please do not feel bad about yourself. The media is making this flu epidemic seem so serious and it is no wonder that people are afraid to leave their homes. I am a 18 weeks and I refuse to go in crowded places where germs may manifest themselves. Plus, I refuse to take the flu shot. My OBGYN actually suggested that I NOT put myself into places where I may catch the flu.

You now have another life you have to think about so I do not blame you AT ALL.
