Preemies

Head too small = neurological problems?

I'm not much of a poster here, more like a lurker. My LO had her 1 year dr. appointment this past wk. She weighed at 17 lbs, 28 in long & head circumference at 16.5in. Let me just say she is a 36 weeker, late preemie born at 4 lbs 1 oz. Her doctor advise me she just under her age group percentile & her head is too small.

He wants to do a CT scan he believes she might have neurological problems. She's on time with her milestones, except physical she is about 1 month behind. I just want your opinions. My mother instincts say that she's fine, she's a preemie.

Re: Head too small = neurological problems?

  • Just by glancing at the growth chart it doesnt look like it her head circumference is that far behind her weight and height.  De your pedi refer you to a neurologist?  I would think that having a specialist do a quick assessment may be warranted before doing a CT scan, especially if she is hitting her milestones.

Im sorry you are dealing with this, I know how hard it can be to get news surprising news at well visits.

  • I am not sure if the specialist is like the one that we have been seeing, but he wouldn't even see the twins without the ct scan. They were seeing him about helmets, but from our appointment I got the feel that he requires them from all of his patients before their first visit. So, maybe the CT scan is more of a formality so that he can see everything and be able to have a very informative visit.
