Late Term and Child Loss

Loss and potential insurance fight?

Hi ladies,

We lost our first baby and first pregnancy on New Years Eve/Day at 9.5 weeks unfortunately. Its been a little over a week now, and we;re getting better but we still have our days where we're just sad, and its hard to move on. But knowing we can and want to try again in a few months once I'm healed helps I think.

But on top of this awfulness, I find out at my doctors office today that my insurance sucks and I'm afraid I may have a fight on my hands. The billing lady informed me that BCBS LA essentially negates any prenatal/maternity coverage when you miscarry, thus you have to pay back co-pays for any previous appointments that had been previously covered. Granted we were early on so it is only a couple for us, but I can't imagine if that happened and we were further along. Not to mention the anxiety attacks I keep having thinking about the potential ER bill we could be facing now. How cold can these companies be to try such a thing?!

Has anyone else had this happen to them? I'd be grateful for any stories, tips and advice we can get. I have a feeling we'll be contesting but have never had to before so we're kinda starting from scratch. Just heartbroken over here . . .

Thanks ladies.

Re: Loss and potential insurance fight?

  • I am so sorry for your loss and to have to deal with insurance garbage on top of it all just sucks.

I don't know if anyone here will be able to answer your question since we have all had later losses. You may find better support on the miscarriage/pregnancy loss board.

    Hugs and Good Luck!!

  • I was in the process of switching my insurance from Cigna to BCBS NJ when we had our miscarriage in 2011 so I was on the phone with BCBS anyway because I just think that they continually screw up.  I was able to get them to cover everything without too much of a fight but it seems that every time someone in our family goes to the doctor I have to get on the phone because they screw up the claim somehow.

  • Thank you so much - I really appreciate it. I did post there too as I wasn't sure which might be better.

  • I don't have experience with your issue but I think that is really cruel of your insurance company to request you pay back.
