So, once again auntie nails it. We had two late RSVPs, both of which were for girls from DD1's preschool class -- I was stressed over the lack of girls for no reason. One girl, DD1 calls her "funny bird friend" and they were trading hugs and kisses at the party.
My little Sophie-bird requested a bird cake, and her favorite bird is an eagle, so DH and I worked together to make this:
DD1 kept opening the fridge to look at it, and she was telling everybody that "Mama and Dadda made this special for me!" I'm inordinately proud of this cake, it's by far the fanciest thing I've ever made.
Party was at a gymnastics gym with bounce houses, tramp, foam pit, etc. I'm only going to post pics of my girls, but we had a great crowd and I think all the kids enjoyed themselves.
DH noticed a few things I didn't -- that when the kids came in, they talked about/asked about where Sophie was and were looking forward to seeing her. And a very sweet thing, even with her friends around, DD1 still paid attention to what DD2 was doing and wanted to stick with her frequently, even if it meant climbing out of the foam pit (which DD1 loves) b/c DD2 didn't want to go in. I love how comfortable and close my sweeties are.
It was a very good day. I'll treasure that one for a long time, b/c it just felt like a regular old birthday party that any kid might have. I always notice her flat affect more on occasions like this, but other than that, it was a pretty darn good celebration. And she is very enamored with being five ("A five-year-old can do --fill-in-the-blank-- on my own," she keeps telling me).
I reserve the right to delete pics at some point.
ETA: Resized giant pic.

So happy to read this!
And the cake is fantastic!
I'm going to pm you in the next couple of days if thats ok. You responded to my thread and our DDs sound so similar! I'm new to this and would love to "chat" with you.
I'll keep an eye out. The beginning is very rough and I'm happy to help if I can.

thank you so much - it really means a lot to me. I feel lucky to have "met" you here!
LOL at cheese pit.
Nope. Those things are hard to get out of! The little kids kind of surf/swim along the surface, but when you're bigger and heavier and sink down in, it's actually kind of a PITA to maneuver in them.
