Breastfeeding

Dissapointed-Shoul I stop Breastfeeding?

Ok a little background. LO is 9 Months old. Everything has been super normal with him. He was on breast milk exclusevely since day one. No major problems, I I introduced solids at 5 months and he reacted very well to them. His weight had been ok. Lately he has not been drinking as much milk, which I assummed was pretty normal since he eats more foods now.

Well We had his 9 month check up and he went from the 50% percentile to 25
% (He weights 19 lbs.) and the doctor recomeded that I supplement with formula... or just drop breasfeeding all together. I am very dissapointed and sad, I really dont want to stop, I am still producing enough milk to keep up with him. I also hate the idea of introducing formula this far. I would really like to continue breasfeeding, but I am concerned about his weight.

Any opinions? suggestions?

Re: Dissapointed-Shoul I stop Breastfeeding?

  • I am so sorry that's stressful. If your producing enough and LO just isn't drinking it, how is formula supposed to help?
Is LO a distracted eater or is there something like that, that has changed eating habits?
I wouldn't go straight to formula.
My son is 5 months and dropped percentile too but we just switched to eping not ideal but its been amazing for him!

  • Honestly, your doc sounds like a quack. Most babies slow in growth around that time. Since usually the 9-12 month range is where they start to become mobile and burn more calories. So they won't gain as much weight.

  • Thanks for the support!!!

He is a pretty distracted eater, but I manage to somewhat get him to latch again! I appreciate your suggestions!!!

  • Nana_Osaki...

I did think of that as well. He is crawling and keeps himself pretty active!! I just want to make sure he is ok! ;-(

  • My DS also dropped in percentile at his 9 month appointment and his pediatrician said it was completely normal and expected to see that at 9 months because they've started to be on the move more. He went right back to normal after that and never dropped in percentile again.  I wouldn't want to supplement with formula, either.  It sounds like you have enough milk for him to have everything he needs. Personally I would give it more time but I know it's hard when they make you worry...

  • @ ninthgirl Thanks so much for the response!!! I will try everything you suggested. Some of the things you mentioned I have not yet tried.

I just dont want to quit since we were doing so good, Im still producing so I see no point in suplementing!!!

    Thanks again!

  • Don't quit!

DD dropped off the charts at her 9 month and I was also told that "maybe it's time to stop nursing and put her on formula." I said a big FU to that and instead just started giving DD foods with healthy fats like avocados, full fat yogurts, mixing a little olive oil in her purees, etc.

DD is still off the charts but is gaining weight. She's just a very active toddler now. We have a new Pedi (we moved) and they are not concerned about her weight at all.

    Oh and I'm still nursing.

The dr is not a quack. Percentiles reflect that on average weight gain slows. A drop in percentiles means a slower than average weight gain, and the dr and parent should be concerned. The priority should be to add in calories. pp has some good suggestions on calorie-dense foods, and try to nurse more/boost supply if you want to keep bf.

The reason drs suggest formula in these cases for two reasons. 1. most women do experience a drop in supply at this point so the baby is getting less milk (= fewer calories) 2. the only way to know how many calories a bf baby is getting would be to do weighed feedings. With formula, you know.

Totally this! To put this into perspective, my son was 25 lbs at six months; he will be 4 years old in two weeks and is around 32-33 lbs. Once they get mobile, the weight just falls off a lot of them. I wouldn't switch to formula; I agree with adding calorie-dense foods after feedings.

  • my daughter consistently dropped %tile while i breastfed her.

she was 50-75% around 0-3m and <25% 9-12m.  After 5/6 she was super active and not a long nurser which I'm sure contributed.

i never supplemented with formula and kept EBF (plus solids) until 12m.

Dr. never encouraged me to stop BF and attributed to the decline to activity level and that most babies become their "natural" size after 6m.  She is just petite he said.

Today she is 2.5yrs super healthy, normal weight, a bit petite - but I think that is just her build.  I'm really glad i did not supplement - I think babies take what they need and that is what your LO is probably doing :)

  • For sure, I wouldn't stop breastfeeding! At my DD's 9 month appointment she weighed 18 pounds and I don't remember the exact % she was, somewhere around 40% I think, so I don't see how your LO, who was a pound heavier, could be a lower % than her. Your doc must be using the wrong chart like PP suggested. My pedi wasn't concerned at all with her % drop and actually said that DD must be reading the books on growth as she is growing perfect! I would assume that your doc sees a lot more ff babies.

  • Thanks everyone for the support and suggestions. I defenetely do not want to stop and I will not supplement with formula. I will try difefrent things and see how that works out. LO is in fact super active, crawls all over the place and stands up on crib and funiture most of the day so Im sure that has a lot to do with it.

    Thanks again!

  • Just adding a link to others' comments with the WHO growth charts (the links to the charts are at the bottom of the article.)  You can look on it and see if these % match up to the ones your pedi gave you.  If not, then your pedi is not using the chart for breastfed babies.

  • My Ds also dropped percentiles at around that age.  He weighed less than 19lbs at a year old.  Once he hit 18ish months he started gaining again and has been in the 50% for weight and height ever since (he'll be 5 in april).  I would continue what you are doing and adding good high fat/calorie foods.  If you have supply there is not a good reason IMO to supplement.  You can do weighted feedings with BM too.
