Medala advanced personal double pump machine?

I put this question on the breast pump page but I couldn't get an answer.

Does anyone else use the Medala advanced personal double pump machine?

I pump for 10mins every 3hrs but I'm having trouble figuring out if I'm getting all i can from my pumping.

The first phase: Stimulation Phase expresses last about 2mins and my milk expresses during this phase, but, then switches over to the second phase: Expression Phase, I pump for the remaining 8mins on the Expression phase but nothing is expressed, and the machine won't let me switch back over to the first phase.

Am I staying on the machine long enough?  Does anyone know how long the Expression Phase is?  Is anyone else dealing with this also?

  • Our hospital lactation person said to go for 20 mins on each side after nursing for 20 min on each side back when LO was born.  Sounded like it was to stimulate milk production ..... pedi said to change th? angle of the phlange as pumping to make sure getting all the various milk ducts, otherwise will get clogging and will not produce as much as otherwise would... not sure if that will help you or not; GL!

  • I have a different Medela pump but they look similar. If you push the letdown button it doesn't go back to stimulation phase? I think it should. Also I find once it moves to expression phase I have to turn up the suction to get good milk output.

  • I would try to pump at least 15 to 20 minutes. If you turn it off after your first 10 minutes and start it over you may get a second let down. Also look at pics online to make sure you are using the right size parts. This could hinder your pumping effectiveness too.

  • Thanks ladies, I'll try all your suggestions.
  • Once it switches over you need to turn it up. I've be busy reading or watching tv and forgotten to do that and I didnt really get any milk out but once I turn it up it starts getting the milk out. Good Luck. I hope this works for you.
  • When I pump I do it for at least 30 minutes unless I'm doing it directly after a breast feeding session.
