I am not sure what to do...

Lately D has begun a new pattern. Every day when I get him home from daycare I can't put him down without him crying or flat out throwing a tantrum!  I kinda think he misses me or is sensing baby #2 will soon be here.

So you STM's...any advice on this?  Do I just put him down and let him cry it out?  It breaks my heart but I have to get his dinner ready and plus physically I can't carry him around for long anymore.

Maybe trying playing with him for 10-15 minutes? Will that help settle him down? I usually have daddy distract her by playing and reading while I get dinner going.

This is what works for us.  We have to have some "Jason-time", and then I'll start dinner and daddy will keep playing.

This used to be daddy's job but since he started a new job he's not home when we get there. I've tried playing with him as much as I can. I can't get on the floor easily because of my huge belly. I even tried turning on Micky Mouse Clubhouse. It seems like it doesn't make a difference he just cries.

    Maybe its daddy he misses?

  • Can you do a small snack in the highchair while you prep/warm his dinner?  J tends to get a few yogurt melts or some fruit while we're putting his dinner together.

  • I can do some fruit in his highchair while I get dinner ready. I'll give it a try today. Thanks!

  • I have no advice, but I hope you find something that works.  We are going through the same thing right now.  I think K hit a separation anxiety with the holiday travel, new room at daycare, and a new teacher.  As I fix dinner, I'm holding him, my husband is holding him, or he's screaming on the floor.  I hope it is a phase that passes soon.

Yes I hope for both our sakes...it is just a phase!

We do this too. Good luck!

This seems to work really well for ustoo -- I pull the highchair into the kitchen and dice up some fruit for DS to have a little "appetizer" before supper while he watches me cook.

  • I think part of it is this age.  Its especially worse on the 2 days he goes to daycare.

I like to put on music and ask him to dance with me in the kitchen while I prep dinner.  He'll also dance in his high chair and snack on teddy grahams or grapes while I make dinner.

What he wants is attention so I just have to get creative on how I can give it to him while getting what I need done.

Oooh the music & dancing thing may work for us! D loves to dance. I'll give this a try too. Thanks!

  • SInce you are cooking your LO could too! Get a big bowl, fill it with a littile water and a spoon or spatula and let him go to town. Bo looooves stirring or pretending to add spice. Yes, there will be some water on the highchair or floor, nbd!

Stickers are life savers--so are coffee creamer bottles with cherrios in it. Can you try this with an empty milk carton by putting some rice/ pasta, water, and food coloring? Bo likes shaking the bottle and watching the blue water swoosh all over.

GL tonight! Looks like you will be dancing and eating fruit!

    P.S.,

I am jealous of your big belly!

Don't be jealous! It's getting rather uncomfortable already and I still have like 6 weeks to go. Those are all great ideas! You are so creative. I'm so glad because my baby-brain is mush these days.

ditto all of this. H has been working later, so it falls on me to prep dinner and entertain the munchkin. I love the other ideas in this thread too.

  • O will do that sometimes after a nap, and also right before dinner.

I always figured she was a.) grumpy from sleep and b.)hungry.

I try to distract her a little give her a snack and then eventually she settles down and forgets I'm not holding her anymore.
