1st Trimester

Work load vent

First I would like to say that I am thankful to have a job and I know we all have bad days... but please allow me to vent about my work situation.  In my work group, we used to have about 8 people, sometimes 9 to share the work load.  It seems we have been losing people left and right lately, and it takes forever at this company to hire new people.  Right now we are down to 6 people and just found out yesterday that one person is taking a medical leave of absence, which will put us down to 5 people to handle the work load.  Also, January-May is our busiest time of the year.  On top of all that, we are changing over to a new "operating" system during this time this year, so that will add work also.  So I am very frustrated because I am going to end up picking up a good bit of extra work on top of an already full plate.  Obviously I have not told my manager that I am pregnant yet, but I am another person he will have to backfill (and potentially replace) in September.  I think I am just irritable right now anyway and all this stress and change is not helping!  Ok, sorry I just had to get that off my chest!  Are there any others out there dealing with stressful jobs and wondering when to break the news about being PG?

Re: Work load vent

  • Just wanted to say how sorry i am that it's so stressful for you. That's no fun.  As for when to break the news...it depends.  How cut-throat is your job?  Are hours guaranteed?  How/when you break it depends on the politics of your workplace and what's best for your family.

Good luck, and try to breathe.

  • I agree with the questions asked by PP but also I would consider telling earlier if you thought your work load would affect your health. I told my boss this week even though many people wait until second tri. He was very supportive and I feel like if I weren't able to keep up with my work he would be extremely understanding as well.

  • You have to do what is right for you and the baby. Speak up if you feel too stressed and are afraid it might affect your health or get you sick. I was getting really stressed out b/c I had planned work travel, found out I was pregnant and started spotting. I talked to my boss right away and voiced my concerns and just said the doctor said I can't travel (even though they didn't). I had to do what my gut told me even though I wanted to wait until the second trimester to tell work.
  • I agree with all of these ladies- and don't be afraid to get your OB behind you- mine was happy to write notes for work or whatever I needed to decrease my stress and help my health (severe m/s).  I am struggling with it again this time (twins) and am now at a different job.  I've been here 3 years (my son is 5), so I've put some time in, but we are short staffed as well.  My boss and department head both know I am preggo, although it is early (8weeks) just due to the fact that I am fighting such bad nausea.  I've worked from home one day last week and have really fought to make it in this week.  I've made it, but took a long lunch at home today laying on the couch.  I might be talking to the OB next week on considering some options on working from home.  My office doesn't do that as a normal thing though- so very nervous about it!

But do what you have to for your health and the baby! and get your OB's support and help if you need her back up to tell them you can only work a certain amount of hours or whatever it might be.
