Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Starting solids soon but have some questions

My DD is 4 months old.  Her pedi says she can start solids at 5 months and wants her on cereal.  I had wanted to avoid cereal's as I've heard they have no nutritional value.  She argued that their is alot of iron and zinc in them.   Also because my supply dipped while I was sick and I had to supplement with formula she feels formula should be mixed with the cereal and not BM.  I'm a little confused as to why she would suggest this since everything I've read says BM is best. Any thoughts on why these suggestions were made?  Should I just go with the cereal?

Re: Starting solids soon but have some questions

  • Honestly, what your pediatrician said is all very outdated. Cereals aren't a necessary first food, and breastmilk is perfect to mix with foods.

  • Thank you!  That's what I thought.  I was all ready to start with avocado and then she argued with me.  I was so confused by the "since she's had formula you should mix that with her cereal" part of the conversation.

  • my ped just said start with whatever...however new research I've seen and she mentioned that ebf babies after four months are often iron deficient and cereal and formula have iron in them....I would assume your ped is just thinking formula would be easier then pumping...

  • We went yesterday to the pedi for LOs 4 mth check and our pedi said that they strongly recommend until waiting until 6 months to introduce solids and that if we waited we could skip cereals. We were planning on doing BLW anyways at 6 months, but this just reaffirmed our choice for us.

  • There's no one way or right answer when it comes to starting solids.  Rice cereal does have a lot of vitamins and nutrients in it but it's not a must-do.  You can mix it with BM or formula, it doesn't matter.  I started with rice cereal with a little BM and squash puree mixed in.  I chose to go ahead and start with the rice cereal because it's bland and to get him used to trying more solid food.  After we see his pedi this month for his 6 month check-up, I'll ask about just switching to purees.

Some people skip cereals all together and just do purees or even baby led weaning where you don't do purees at all.  It's really just a choice.

  • i would stick with breast milk. If you give him formula, it will hurt your supply. We started with oatmeal, the I gave him apples, avocado, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, bananas and carrots. He still nurses the same and eats solids once a day. Hell be 6 months on Saturday, so we're going to start 2x day next week.

  • We're starting w/ oatmeal although he hated the sensation.  Avocado and banana haven't gone much better but I do it here and there.  Soon I need to make a habit but I'm skipping cereal (saw an arsenic story recently on baby cereal) and will do oatmeal!
