My DD is 4 months old. Her pedi says she can start solids at 5 months and wants her on cereal. I had wanted to avoid cereal's as I've heard they have no nutritional value. She argued that their is alot of iron and zinc in them. Also because my supply dipped while I was sick and I had to supplement with formula she feels formula should be mixed with the cereal and not BM. I'm a little confused as to why she would suggest this since everything I've read says BM is best. Any thoughts on why these suggestions were made? Should I just go with the cereal?
Re: Starting solids soon but have some questions
There's no one way or right answer when it comes to starting solids. Rice cereal does have a lot of vitamins and nutrients in it but it's not a must-do. You can mix it with BM or formula, it doesn't matter. I started with rice cereal with a little BM and squash puree mixed in. I chose to go ahead and start with the rice cereal because it's bland and to get him used to trying more solid food. After we see his pedi this month for his 6 month check-up, I'll ask about just switching to purees.
Some people skip cereals all together and just do purees or even baby led weaning where you don't do purees at all. It's really just a choice.
This!
i would stick with breast milk. If you give him formula, it will hurt your supply. We started with oatmeal, the I gave him apples, avocado, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, bananas and carrots. He still nurses the same and eats solids once a day. Hell be 6 months on Saturday, so we're going to start 2x day next week.
