s/o Boys vs Girls

My coworker (a grandmother in her 50's) is always telling me how boys are SO much more exhausting than girls in the younger years. She's always saying how her grandson is running everywhere and is into everything, but when her daughter was young she would sit quietly and color or whatever.

So, is this true, or does it depend on the kid/age? DS is 19 months and he does run everywhere and is into everything, climbing, etc. But he will also sit and read books or do puzzles (for a short time). Those of you with kids around DS's age, what are they like?

Re: s/o Boys vs Girls

  • I completly agree at least in my experience.  DD was a calm child compared to DS.  I swear he has taught her a few bad habits and he is younger.  He loves to climb and is just generally more energetic than DD was at his age.

  • DS was way wilder than my two girls. He wasn't "bad", but he was just into everything. None of my kids are quiet (wonder who they get that from?? lol) but there is an obvious difference.

  • For me I think it may be the age thing. Right now C is into everything, crawling all over the place, pulling up, etc and is IN EVERYTHING! Now A is will sit quietly and play for a few minutes and then move on, etc.

Obviously I don't have a boy, so I have no idea if they play different.

  • Well, I have to blow this myth. You've seen it, DD is all over the place. She is into everything. Although, I will say when she plays with our neighbors little boy she gets even more rambunctious. She rarely sits and plays with something for more than 5 minutes.

  • I replied in the other thread, but DD is not as crazy as some boys I've seen, and she does like to read books for a couple of minutes, but she can destroy a room in a matter of minutes.  Every container must be dumped, the tupperware and water bottles must all be removed from the only cabinets that are not locked, she throws balls for the sake of going to fetch them, and is generally into everything.

Exhibit A (this easily took less than 5 minutes):

  • DS is a little cheeseball and his teachers say that he is the class clown - he loves to run around, climb, throw balls, dance, etc. so he is definitely all boy... but, he also loves to just snuggle and read books and color as well.

  • I think this is total gender stereotyping. DD is pretty much into everything and rarely sits still. She'll sit while we read a book, but that's about it. (She doesn't sit through all books, only her favorites and only when she is tired). She runs, climbs and likes to empty out cupboards and "pet"/chase the dog. She has just now gotten to the point when I can *sometimes* get her involved in an activity for 5 or 10 minutes (at most and this is rare).

  • I thought D1 was busy until D2 came along.  I thought D2 was busy until my good friend brought her son over.  Whoa!

I'm sure there are exceptions to every rule but both of my girls are quiet and calm compared to my friend's son.

  • DS is 22 months and he is exactly how your described your son SK!  He is all over the place, running, jumping, climbing, but when we are winding down for the night he will sit and watch a movie or read a book.  It's exhausting during the day (when I am home with him) but it does help going to bed at night-for me at least :)

  • This is true in my experience. There are a ton of baby girls between my numerous cousins and friends, and they all seem to play quieter and listen better. The boys in general seem to be a tad harder to control. I mean, my boys definitely aren't out of control or anything but they definitely keep me on my toes.

  • Kieran has always been a calm child.  Never getting into too much and preferring to sit and play with his puzzles or read books.  He is just now starting to get a tiny crazy at 28 months, but he is 100% calmer then most of my friend's kids.

    Yes

I have nothing to compare to, but my DD is active and into lots of things.  I think there are some gender difference, but they are pretty minimal from what I've seen.  She plays with dolls, pretends to be a puppy, and will sit and read a book quietly, etc. but she also destroyed our bathroom while washing her hands yesterday and then spent an hour kicking a giant balance ball w/ DH and played hide and seek w/ the new cat.

  • I haven't read the other responses but I personally don't find it to be true. My DD, while very sweet and loving is also into everything. Climbing on furniture, getting into cabinets, you name it.

I really just think it depends on the kids personality and has nothing to do with whether they are a boy or a girl. I get SO mad when I'm out somewhere and I see a little boy being an absolute terror and the parents just kind of shrug like oh well he's a boy, that's what they do. No. That's what children who lack guidance and discipline do.

  • And I will say it was also the complete opposite with my husband and his sister. His mom always says how he was THE best kid ever and would do whatever you asked him to and would sit quietly and play with his toys. My SIL was anything but tame and obedient and had the stereotypical 'boy' personality.

It must be a September 8th birthday thing with boys then :) B was so calm until he was about 3 and started school. C has always been a little on the crazy side and is just now starting to calm down except for when you make her angry. You wouldn't like her when she's angry :)

This is pretty much what I think, though I don't have a girl to compare DS to. But even if I did, it'd just be comparing 1 girl to 1 boy, not ALL girls to ALL boys.

  • I agree that it's gender stereotyping... While Bailey isn't a "wild child" persay, she is very active and very into everything. She climbs, tears into her toys and there's a mess 30 minutes into every morning. But she'll also find things to do and sit quietly lately for small amount of time (plays with duplo blocks by herself for 10 minutes or play in her kitchen quietly for a bit) but then it's on to the next thing!

  • Jackson is a very busy child. Everything has to be dumped out to the point where I may break an ankle navigating all his cars, blocks, and trains. That being said he also loves to snuggle up and read books (up to 5 at a time) multiple times a day. He will occasionally play by himself but he is very attached to his "mama" right now. I also think his activity level is in part due to his age, not because he is a boy.

Not my little spitfire!  Lilly is ON THE GO!  I wish she would sit and color!!!  I am hoping this boy has Tommy's laid back personality!

  • Victor has been much more high maintanence than Evie ever was.   I don't know if it is a gender thing or a personality thing.  My mom says it is because he is a boy, LOL.

  • I have seen wild boys (and wild girls) that are busier than DD, but not that many, and I don't think it's because of gender...she is into everything, runs around like crazy, can dump everything off of shelves in 30 seconds if she gets an opportunity. ;) she just started enjoying books and will sit and read a couple with me and occasionally (or, rarely) sits and plays with a  toy in one spot. But mostly she is running around.

  • I do not agree at all! My DD is around your DS's age almost 19 months. She is into everything and always has been. There is no rest for the weary in our house. She needs to be watched at all times because she will even climb the furniture or attempt to climb over the baby gates. My in laws swear she is just like DH was at that age.
