My DD will be one next week and still doesn't really drink from a sippy. Part of this is likely my fault, she was a slow gainer early on and our ped really just wanted me to push bottles and nothing else bc she also has a small appetite and would fill up on water. She understands she is supposed to drink from it but won't lift it up enough to get anything and just chews on it. We've used the Tupperware old school ones(no leak stopper) and she'll take a few sips if we offer to do it but never tries to actually drink from it and will just tip it over and spill everything. Any of the Nuk and straw cups she just chews on and bangs on the table. Any tips? She's never even held her own bottle but I think that's mostly bc she'd rather hold a toy in her hand while I feed her. TIA for any pointers you have!
Re: Sippy cup?
Is she interested in your drinks at all? We taught DD to drink from a straw using the straw from our own cup. Using your finger to keep liquid in it then putting it in DD's mouth and letting the liquid flow into her mouth. Once she started swallowing that we would wait for her to suck before letting the liquid out. Does that make sense? When she started drinking from her own straw cups she would suck all the liquid into her mouth and then let it flow out the sides of her mouth (we would only put water in there and a towel underneath her). Eventually she learned to swallow and control the amount of liquid.
FWIW - DD never held her own bottle either.

First, chewing and banging are perfectly normal. I find the banging obnoxious and try to limit it, but it's part of having a toddler.
Second, it's perfectly normal that she can't drink well on her own yet. DS didn't drink well on his own for a long time (well after a year). I'd always have to correct the way he held the cup so he could actually get something. And he still loves to bang his cup around, and occasionally manages to dump it out.
Two tips:
DS loves to drink from my straw - I think he thought it was exciting at first because it was forbidden for so long (and still is if it's anything besides water). It took him awhile to actually drink anything (as opposed to sucking it into his mouth, then opening his mouth and letting it spill out), but he learned. I just gave him the straw, but placed my fingers about an inch down so he wouldn't put too much straw in his mouth and choke.
Another thing is - you don't have to do sippy cups. Some people go straight to regular cups. It takes work on YOUR part, but if you're still holding the bottle for her, it wouldn't take any more time (except you'd need to keep a rag handy for spills
)
My favorite sippies are a Nuk soft spout (practically a bottle - it's no-spill, but doesn't have a plug) - one has turtles, and the other has ladybugs. The others I use most are Playtex cups with no spouts - it looks like a coffee cup, and has been mistaken as such. We originally started with the Playtex straw cups. With all of them, it took awhile for him to get the hang of it.
It took DS about 3 months to get the hang of the sippy, so just keep trying! Keep giving her one every day, she'll eventually get it. Try some ice water, that seemed to peak DS's interest a little more!
Also, he only does straw cups.
