Baby Names

Nicknames

DH and I love the name Penelope if we have a girl (we can't wait to find out in Feb!), but hate the idea of people calling her "Penny" as a nickname. We've been thinking though, that if we give her a different nickname before people get a chance to call her "Penny", we can kind of head it off. What nicknames, besides "Penny" could we use for Penelope?

Thanks!

Re: Nicknames

  • Nell is one I've heard people mention, and I think it's a super cute nn

  • I really love Poppy as a NN for Penelope. Nell is nice, too.

We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.
  • I'd never heard of Poppy as a nn for Penelope, but I really like it... I like Penny too though (either because I like Big Bang Theory or because my childhood puppy was named Penny) Also, Nellie?
  • I like Poppy for it. Although if you really love the name, just correct anyone who calls her "Penny". After a while, the child will correct anyone who does it.

We were worried about that with my oldest - his name is Christian and we didn't want it shortened to Chris but it was never an issue.

Our second son is Lucas, nickname Luke, but he tells people he wants to be called Lucas because that is his name. I told him that's fine for everyone else, but I'm his mother and will call him what I want - so he's Luke to me lol!

  • Well, I don't like NN for Amelia so we just call DD Amelia.  Hopefully it will stick.

  • Just wanted to throw it out there that non don't have to have anything to do with the given name my one aunt is Michaela, but is called Mimi, my other aunt is Ruth but called "Rux," a friend's mom is Elizabeth but called "Puddie," and my husband's grandfather was Aristedes, but called "Jim." There's stories behind these usually, but so what. You can make up a story!
