Anyone have problems with kids who sleep too much? DS (17 months) has multiple brain abnormalities. 3 times in the last month, he has slept 17-19 hours straight overnight and would have slept longer had we not woken (woke? Awakened?) him up. He routinely naps for at least 3 hours a day and sleeps 11-13 hours overnight. The pediatrician wants to talk to his neurologist. She also wants to check his thyroid.
I was just wondering if anyone else is in a similar situation? I feel silly for being concerned about my kid sleeping too much, but I don't really know if it is a problem or not, KWIM. "Is this normal?"
Re: Too much sleep?
DD2 sleeps alot, she is almost 2 and her normal now is about 8pm-10am with a 2 hour nap, she was sleeping 7pm-11am (OR LATER) with her nap as well. The pedi said to just wake her up and didn't really think much of it, I will mention it to neuro when we go in Feb and see if we can add that onto her neuromusclar lab re-checks.
M was probably around 17 months old when I noticed the peak of the massive amounts of sleep, however her MRI has been normal (unlike dd1) so i'm not sure. Interested to see others responses.
the 17-19 hours is concerning to me. was there any sort of illness/fever or did he maybe have a milestone jump to tire him out more? Have you done an extended EEG to r/o seizures while sleeping?
Nate sleeps 11 hours a night and will take a 2.5-3 hour nap each day. I think of it as a karma payback of sorts. I consider having a wonderful sleeper and eater my "consolation prize" for a genetically challenged child..... ;P
Didn't he just start some walking/steps? is there any correlation? He could just be pooped.
I would try and keep track of the sleeping for a couple of months and see if any pattern emerges.
This latest time he was sick. He's been sick for a week now. It was the week before that when he took steps in PT. I can't remember anything specific that happened around the other two long sleeps. The pediatrician wants bloodwork this week just to make sure everything is okay. I will also start writing it down.
Thanks for the insight.
(We go back to PT tomorrow for the first time since the steps. Fingers crossed for more!)
*chants* More steps! More steps! More steps!
I didn't even think about the link between midline issues and sleep apnea. I will definitely be talking with the pediatrician about it. Thanks!
There is no link that I am aware of between midline defects and sleep apnea, but if you already have structures that are malformed along the midline, I would surmise that other stuff could be as well. The sleep system involves all midline structures so....
