What is your favorite charity?

What is your favorite charity? If you had a bunch of money to donate, who would you donate to?

Re: What is your favorite charity?

  • I don't really have a favorite specific charity, so if I had a bunch of money I wanted to donate, I would have to do some research.

Issues that interest me are domestic violence education/prevention/treatment, environmental preservation/protection, and childhood literacy.

Same here.  I'd focus on children's literacy, DH would want to focus on some sort of arts program/scholarship/etc.

ETA: A girl I went to high school with had a micro-premie (she's 2 now).  Each holiday season she makes up baskets to send to the NICUs nearby and includes cards of encouragement and kind words, and gift cards.  I'd put a big fat donation in towards that, because after reading her blog, and hearing their struggles, I know those families need that encouragement.

Along those lines, I was going to say Ronald McDonald House. Ruby was in the hospital once and I was pregnant and staying with her. We were at the hosp for 3 days together. The volunteers were so helpful. Obv, I didn't stay in the RMHouse, but the foundation had a room on the childrens' floor for the parents to be more comfortable. They brought me drinks and snacks and had so much to offer other parents who needed it much more than I did. They were like angels for parents who are busy worrying.

  • 65 Roses. My aunt passed away from CF so that has always been near and dear to me.

My boss's daughter is currently fighting leukemia, and he said Paul Newman has this great program for kids in the hospital called the Hole in the Wall Gang that does awesome activities to help keep the kids' minds off their illnesses. I may donate to them in the future if I have the opportunity.

  • Education! I would pay a worthy scholar's tuition anonymously along with meals and a car.

I am trying to figure out a schedule so I can work with local teenage mothers, and juniors in high school contemplating college.

My interests are shifting because of recent travesties....I would like to learn more about survivors of heinous crimes or a support system for the families who lost a loved one.

  • While there are lots of national and well-known non-profits that do a lot of good... I really love the idea of local charities really supporting people in my local community.

We have a program here that I want to volunteer for that sends backpacks of food home with kids on the weekends to make sure they have enough to eat. It breaks my heart thinking of elementary school kids going hungry because there isn't food at home.

My DH is a burn survivor... and a few years ago we made a donation to a family in town after their son was burned. It was amazing because obviously the money helped the family with some expenses, but I think DH sharing his story with the kid was even better... a good way for DH to continue his own healing several years later and a way to show this pre-teen kid that it does get better. I should encourage DH to maybe get involved with the local fire dept. or a nearby burn center to volunteer/share his story.

  • I don't have a favorite per say, but first off, I would donate to Huntington's research and for TTTS research as those are two diseases that have impacted us greatly.

Aside from that, probably at least some towards our provincial children's hospital and local charities.

Yes, the local food bank in my old town did this too!  We used to volunteer there and donate to the charity and to that program specifically.

  • I would say American Cancer Society. Both of my parents have had cancer so that is a charity that I try to give to when I can. Or I give to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.
