Progesterone Help!

I just got my bloodwork back, and while my HCG levels seem ok, my progesterone level is low. I was given an Rx for 200mg of Prometrium, but from the research I've been doing online, it seems as if vaginal suppsitories are the most effective form.

Does anyone have any experience/advice? I was so nervous to begin with, as my last pregancy ended in a m/c...but now the uncertainty is unbearable! Any insight would be most appreciated!

  • I've been informed that the shots are the most effective form. One of my friends recently used the cream, and she is now in week 34 of her pregnancy. Are you seeing a family doc or a specialist?

  • I am currently using the Endometrian Vaginal Inserts. I will need to be on them for up to 10 weeks, but my doctor is very positive that they are doing a great job. I am also an IVF patient so there might be a differance in why I need them vs you.  I was at 3 a day and it was too much so now I do 100mg twice a day. I do get lightheaded and dizzy but nothing that makes me not function normally. I would suggest something to your OB and see what they say. Good luch and congratulations!!

  • you can stick the Prometrium up your hooha. There's no harm in it. Taking it orally will work fine too though.

The common belief is it's stronger when inserted vaginally as it goes directly to the source but it won't increase your blood progesterone levels as much, where orally it will increase your blood progesterone levels but put less progesterone to the source. There have been numerous studies that also say it really doesn't matter.

  • The shots are the most effective, but they usually only prescribe those for IVF etc.  I was on them for 2 weeks, wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy! lol  I was on the suppositories after that, but now off it all after my u/s.  I would just follow doctor's orders- i've heard good things on using prometrium too. Do you know what your level was?

  • I am on Progesterone too. 200 MG, vaginally, twice a day. My last pregnancy ended in miscarriage and I saw an RE. Found out my progesterone is low and I've been on them ever since I got pregnant. They've worked great for me! This is my last week taking them. :) Just be prepared to deal with a lot of CM. :(

  • I got pregnant on Clomid, my doctor suggested i use the vaginal suppository. And he said I could stay on it my whole pregnancy. he says he used it for his patients that need a little extra help maintaining their pregnancy.
