Bottle sizes

I currently use 9 oz bottles on LO and during the day he only takes 6-7 oz bottles but at night he takes a 10 oz bottle. It is a pain to fit it in his born free bottle. I looked online for bigger born free bottles and couldn't find any. Do they make bottles bigger then 9 oz?  He always has eaten a lot before bed and he sleeps through the night. Also when did you start using fast flow nipples. I use level 2 born free nipples and have been since LO was 4 months.

Re: Bottle sizes

  • I've never seen bigger than a 9oz bottle, that's a lot in a little tummy. You want to be careful of stretching out babies stomach, maybe try offering two bottles only an hour a two apart. Or more high calorie solids at dinner.

I know my first never took more than 8oz at once he was ff and my middle never more than 5oz but he was bf so that is different since breastmilk changes for older babies.

  • The most DD takes is 6 oz, and we still use stage 1 nipples.  She is mostly breastfeed though, and usually only has 9 bottles/week.  I guess I'm not sure how much she takes at her bedtime feeding, but I doubt it is more than 6 oz. More often than not she sleeps from 7:45 pm to 7 am.

I've never seen bottles larger than 9 ounces.  Although it might be a pain in the way of washing multiple bottles, you might be better off splitting it between two.  I'm not sure I'd move to a faster nipple. Your LO may fill up too fast and not recognize he's full until he's already been overfed.  Does he seem frustrated with the rate of flow or is the nipple collapsing? If the answer is yes, then I would consider going up, but I'd definitely pace the feeding.

  • How often are you feeding LO and how many oz solids in a sitting? When DS was small, I was told he should be needing more than 32 oz in a day.

    Does LO spit up  much?

If LO isn't satisfied with 9oz bottles, then increase the amount of food. At 7/8months LO should be fairly established in solids unless you are giving breast milk. With BM you can continue EBF for longer, but i would think if the child is not satisfied, food needs introduced or increased size or number of feedings.

You should be able to contact your pediatrician with any of these questions as well.

  • Thanks. I will stick with the stage 2 nipples as he doesn't seem frustrated with the flow.  He has always taken a big bottle at night. He eats solids 3 times a day- 3 oz of purees and takes a 6 oz bottle every 3 hours. He eats dinner at 5:30 and has a 4 oz bottle at 6:30 so he gets plenty to eat prior to his nightime bottle . He has his night time bottle at 7:30.  He is a hungry boy.  He is extremely active all day (pulling himself up and moving NON stop).  Also I believe they say not to feed a baby more then 1/2 his body weight in a sitting as that will fill the stomach.

     His feeding schedule is:

    7- 7 oz bottle
    9- solids
    10:00 6 oz bottle
    12:00 solids
    1:00 6 oz bottle
    3:30 6 oz bottle
    5:30 solids
    6:30 4 oz bottle
    7:30 9 oz bottle

  • I have never seen bottles bigger than 9oz.  My LO is FF and takes 4-5oz bottles every 2-3 hours during the day and sttn 12 hours, but I know that she takes less ounces in a sitting than most.

Are you sure your LO needs 10oz before bed?  That is a lot on top of the 6:30 bottle.  What will he do if you offer a smaller bottle?

  • Is there really a way to tell if  a baby "needs" a certain amount? He fusses if I stop half way so he is obviously still hungry. We offer it to him and if he doesn't finish it then we stop feeding him, but if he wants the whole bottle I don't think I should stop and think "he had enough".  I will just continue with the 9 oz bottle as I don't think Born makes bigger bottles anyway. It is just a pain to mix the formula in because it is so full.  Thanks for the input.

  • The easy way is to add half the water then the formula shake and the fill it up with water and shake again. I used to do this in 4 oz bottles when my first was little.
