at a loss

The past 3 hours have been a circle of almost a sleep.. fussing over wet diaper feed scream scream scream. Shes been on my boob most of the time because shes acting hungry but the de latches and screams bloody murder. I finally woke up DH to give her a bottle since myboobs are so sore and shes doing the same for him rooting, drinking spitting out the nipple..

I dont know what to do.. ps. From my phone so sorry for spelling issues..

Re: at a loss

  • Its possible she is acting hungry because she is tired. She may just want to suck to fall asleep but not want the milk, making her pull off and fuss. Especially after 3 hours. I know DD wants to nurse to fall asleep but gets mad at the milk and that is when I take the boob away and shush/rock/pat until she settles and falls asleep.

  • As you can see, I'm up with you! No sleep for me yet either.. It's gotten much better, but DD is just coming out of a growth spurt. I had a feeling that's what it was, but the fact that she's now fitting in clothes she couldn't fit in 5 days ago confirms that. She would scream even while on the boob and I felt useless. I tried everything. It was only that bad for that night and lasted about 4 hours.

This article helped a lot too.  Sorry for it not being clicky.

  • My LOs often give hunger cues when they have a gas bubble that needs to be brought up. They do the same thing: root and fuss but refuse to nurse or take a bottle, and the only relief comes when they burp....or fart heheh. Maybe something similar is going on w/ your LO and she just needs a good burp....?

  • So far for me, I check the diaper, check to see if she needs a good burp, check to make sure her clothes aren't wet, and check to see that her swaddled is wrapped correctly. Sometimes I find that when she wriggles her arms out of the swaddle, she smacks herself in the face all night long and wakes herself up screaming. White noise (ocean waves) has done wonders with the swaddle combined. Have you looked up Harvey Karp on YouTube?

  • Hugs to you... DD has fussy nights.. EVERY night!.. We are always up from 2 to 5... then she sleeps until noon. I've given up; I nap mornings with her.

  • Milla does that when she's overly tired. I usually just let her cry for a bit, 10 minutes or so, then pay her back and she falls right asleep.

  • My lo did this all last night also.  Starting at 3AM Feed, change, cramp up trying to pass poop or gas, calm down for 5mins and then scream bloody murder, then repeat over and over until 6am.  At one point I brought her into bed, she finally calmed down after 10mins or so, stayed calm for about another 10mins, then for no reason scream.  She did this from 5-6.  She finally fell asleep at 6am, but woke up hungry at 8:30.

Hubby and I trade morning and night shifts, he gets morning.  Waiting for him to get up so I can go back in to bed.

  • I got maybe 2hrs sleep total last night. LO usually sleeps 3 hour stretches. He just wanted to suck. For 3 1/2hrs I was going back and forth between boobs to stop either from getting too sore. He wasn't hungry, just wanted to suck. Wouldn't take a paci, the things that normally help him drift off didn't... It was a fun night. I've been napping with him all morning and am hoping to squeeze one more in before my meeting at 3.

  • We have had similar problem. LO goes from screaming in pain, throwing her head back, sometomimes clentched fists. Would last 3 to 10 min spans, then would calm for a few mins, then back to screaming. Once gas passed through her intestine ... loud gas bubbles, she would become much calmer. Tried gripe water three times, couldnt tell if it helped or not. Saw the dr yesterday for well baby check up, asked about milocone .. sorry, not spelled correctly. Labeled as gas relief, active ingredient is same as what is in Gas X. Has made the fussings shorter and a lot less intense. Gas seems to be passing through easier. Ask the doc; both are OTC...

GL.. it is so agonizing to feel like you cant fix it or comfort her out of it. Oh, and figured out last wee that my LO comfort sucks ... introduced the pacifier that has provided some improvement .. at least can use it to differentiate between hunger and pain needing comfort.

  • Try gas drops! If they don't work, stick a paci in and hold her close LIKE you're breastfeeding her, and then pat her back. It's the only thing that would quiet DS down in the first couple of weeks.
