Waking in the MOTN - what do you do?

Since so many seem to be sleep training I need some advice.  What do you do when they wake in the middle of the night?  My dd goes down around 8 and was sleeping until 4ish.  I would feed her and then she would go right back down until 7 or 8.   Some nights, like last night, she will wake up earlier - like 1 am, and then that seems to trigger her to wake up again a few hours later.  I have let her CIO and that seemed to have worked but now she really cries and it is lasting longer. After 20 minutes or so I always assume she is hungry and I feed her.  Then she does it again a few hours later.  Trying not to feed her unless she has gone at least 7 hours, which I know she can do.  If i get her out of bed, though, there is no getting her calm unless i feed her.  We have tried bottles and rice cereal at night and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Any advice?

  • My lo is like clockwork. Down by 7, awake at 930, awake at 2, awake for the day at 7. He has STTN before, only woke up once before, etc but the past 1.5 months its more nights his "schedule" and sporadic other nights. He eats 36 ounces BM and gets solids at night so I don't know what gives. He normally eats his 6 oz bottle when he wakes up so I guess he is hungry? I'm at a loss. I'm interested to hear the responses.

  • Sometimes they go through growth spurts, physical or developmental, and the need the extra feedings. Just because they did it before, doesn't mean they will always do it. Babies don't read clocks, they don't know it hasn't been 7 hours. They just know they're hungry.

We had 2 weeks of ds eating every 3 hours around the clock. I figured he really needed the extra nutrition.

  • Stella usually sleeps all night, but if/when she doesn't, I try to let her put herself back to sleep first. I let her fuss for about 10 minutes max, and then I will go in and try to soothe her by re-swaddling. I don't pick her up unless I am going to feed her, which is the last resort if she doesn't seem like she will go back to sleep. I don't talk to her when I go in and try to be quick about being in her room.

  • Jacqueline has started to wake up multiple times a night now. Last night DH stayed up late because he is working midnights tonight and I went to bed at midnight. Jacqueline went to bed at 8 and was up screaming at 1:30, she ate a 4oz bottle and went back down. She was up at 2:45 and ate 3oz then was up again at 4:30 and 5:30 then she slept until 8. That was the most she has woken up during the night since the 6 week mark. I'm thinking it's a growth spurt because it's been a gradual thing and she as been really cuddly lately. Also, I think she is starting to teethe, she has been running a low grade fever today, so she's been extra cuddly and took almost 2 hours to put down tonight. We'll see how long she stays asleep tonight.

Oh, and we still swaddle Jacqueline.
