Afraid to poop on potty?

DS1 is in the throws of potty-training... we're finishing up day 4 today and had no pee accidents (YAY!!!!) but he is still afraid to poo on the potty!!  (He pooped the first night of training in his diaper- he is in diapers at nap and night time)...

He is obviously needing to poop- as I know his "cues"... but refuses to go on the potty!

 Any advice or suggestions?

TIA!

Re: Afraid to poop on potty?

  • DD1 has been pee trained day and night since September and she will not poop on the toilet.  She is to the point where she has boycotted pooping all together and won't go on the toilet or in a diaper.  She finally let some out after 8 days yesterday.

We never make it a negative experience even though I'm ready to pull my hair out.  If she seems stressed or if tears are starting we stop.  The few times she has gone on the toilet we've made a huge deal about it; high fives, compliments, M&Ms, she gets to flush and calls grammy to tell her.

Heres what we've tried, maybe it will work for you:

    1. Bribery - we've used M&Ms and ice cream.

    2. Prune juice and fiber bars to increase urgency.

    3. Sitting on the toilet for 20-40 minutes to let gravity do its job.  We read books and count items.

    4. I've stepped out and let her have her privacy.

    Good luck!

  • Get the book "where is the poop?" on amazon. It's a lift flap book where you look for poop from different animals and eventually a little kid on the toilet - she loved this book....

Our Elmo obsessed toddler also liked the short video "potty time" - it's on youtube.

We did give her mirolax and fiber gummies to help move things easily (our pedi recommended doing this because she was holding her poop in prior to PTing)

We talked about poop a lot.  We praised ourselves LOUDLY after we went.  We didn't do treats as a reward for PTing, just praise.

    Best of luck!

Is she in DC? The reason I bring it up is perhaps she had a bad experience at DC related to pooping? You may not have made a big deal about it, which I am in total agreeance with, but someone else may have.

Having said that, I have heard it is totally normal to hold poop in. DD1 pitched fits to the point of snot flying out of her nose, losing her breath, etc. Finally, we let it go for a while, and then started again. What worked for us was sitting her on the toilet, the adult one so she felt more like a "big girl" and explained that she has poopy in her belly, and it needs to come out. It comes out of her tushy and goes into a diaper when she is a baby, but now that she is a big girl it needs to go into the toilet so that we can flush it away. She didn't look convinced, and we sat there for about 45 minutes while she tooted, but no poop. The next night, the same thing, but she repeated back to us that she had poop in her belly (pointing to her belly button of course), and that it needed to come out, etc., and then sure enough, it did. She was very proud of herself, and you would have thought we had just won the lottery the way DH and I were jumping around. Also, she seems to only want to poop at night on her own toilet. So maybe try at different times of the day. She was a mid morning and mid afternoon pooper with diapers, but now only right before she goes to bed. I think she sees it as a game. Also, she gets four mini-M&Ms when she poops.

HA!  My DD had been doing this to me.  She was asking for me and Dh explained I was in the potty.  When I came out she gave me a hug and said "I'm so proud of you, Mommy."

DD has been in potty regression for a few days, but letting her watch a short video or read a book on the potty usually does the trick because she relaxes.  We also do treats afterwards.

She is in DC and our DCP knows the whole ordeal and is in agreeance with our approach, so I don't think anything has happened there.  Also, she has never pooped at DC.

I trained her to the adult potty, we don't even have a potty chair.  DD is very verbal and I've tried ever angle to explain poop and pooping. We have books (with drawn pictures of poopIck!) too.

Everything I've read says it just takes time and so we wait.

  • my dd did it fine at first, then after 2 days decided it was 'yucky' and wouldn't go

I upped the fiber & liquids and talked a LOT about how it was ok, everyone goes (and ready that 'everyone poos' book a lot). After about 4-5 days of struggles she got it down. We also increased her incentives. at first it was 1 for a #1 and 2 for #2 (M&Ms). Now she gets a little chocolate santa for a number 2 and that REALLY worked to get her motivated. Now she realises it's no big deal :)
