do you cook? or do you 'make food'?

On occasion, I will cook a dinner involving a decent amount of prep, many and multiple ingredients, etc.  I do cook from scratch soups, stews, chilis, etc.

But...for the most part, I make food.  I put chicken on the bbq, throw potatoes in the oven, grill or steam veggies, throw together a salad (I am great at salads).

Every now and then I resolve to cook more creatively, but the effort doesn't seem to pay off unless it is a dinner party for adult guests.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am

Re: do you cook? or do you 'make food'?

  • What is cooking?  I either make food, or I pick something up. I don't have the time or patience to do anything from scratch anymore. Before DS was born, I did a lot more experimenting in the kitchen.

I'm a terrible "cook" but I do make dinner/food most days. There really is a difference. I too have made resolutions to cook more, but never do. I just have no interest.

  • I mostly prepare packaged foods and make food in the crock pot. I rarely experiment. I do bake from scratch though.

  • In a perfect world where I have unlimited time and money, I would cook all the time.  I love it.  It's relaxing and fun and nothing makes me happier than when people enjoy my food.

However, this is not my life.  I will cook on weekends if we have time and every once in a while during the week.  If we are having people over for dinner I try to cook.

Most of the time with the kids, I'm making food.

  • DH gets home first so he makes food, and I love to cook, so I do that on the weekends some, but mostly I bake, which is a different sort of art. I love baking sweets and bread and I make pizza crusts and biscuits. I even make muffins or a quick bread at least once during the week so I have something to take for breakfast. And I just mastered this yeast and soda dinner roll recently. OMG the carbs in my house!

  • 99% of the time DH or I make food.  Most meals in our house are simple and take less than 15 minutes to prepare.

We only "cook" for special occasions.

    This.

  • I usually make food.  I want to cook more, but I get so overwhelmed with planning a menu, shopping list, etc. that it scares me off.  I do a lot of stews and chilis from scratch, though, but that's mostly because you can throw the ingredients into a crockpot and be done with it.

  • Mostly "make food".  Every once in a while, I will cook but I just don't think the time commitment and effort is worth the payoff.  I don't find cooking enjoyable but I do LOVE to bake.
  • I usually make food during the week and cook on the weekends.  I would love to cook everyday but that isn't going to happen anytime soon!

  • Compared to you all I must suck!
I almost never really cook, I just make food. Sometimes I'm not even good at that!
  • I usually cook two meals on the weekend and plan them so they make leftovers for Monday and Tuesday nights. The other nights I make food, usually. Last night we had pasta, but I had made the sauce from the tomatoes I grew this summer....I just made it on a weekend in the summer and froze it to use later. ;)

  • Mostly make food. It depends on how much time I have, when I get home from work and how much energy I have. I cook 2-3 times a week where it requires a little more prep than usual but I'm no gourmet chef.
  • I  guess I cook because I make pretty much everything from scratch, but I don't necessarily think cooking has to mean a lot of prep, ingredients, etc.
  • I cook most of the time. During first tri though, it's whatever DH brings home.
I'm pretty good about doing everything from scratch. Literally, because we raise most of our food ourselves. I have chickens right now that I need to butcher, cows that need to be milked and then that milk turned into butter, cheese, yogurt. During the summer it's all about the veggies, figuring out different ways to use fresh and preserving for the coming year.
  • I would say then I always make food and never cook.  I have no idea how to make things from scratch, and with the kids being so picky it doesn't seem to even be worth the time.  Oh I can make pesto from scratch, but given how fat laden it is not really something I do all the time.

Guess I suck.  I blame my mom for never teaching me anything in the kitchen lol

  • I do make everything from scratch, but it's usually something that's easy to throw together like pasta, a casserole, or the crockpot. I don't know if that counts as "cooking". We usually eat leftovers once or twice a week and eat out during the weekend. So I guess I cook a few times a week.

  • My idea of cooking is boiling water for pasta or making mac n cheese Indifferent
  • DW mostly cooks, I mostly "make food". Sometimes I get elaborate, but I'm a very slow cook, and these days my DW isn't that interested in watching the kid for an hour and a half so I can cook at my sloooow speed.

  • both? I make meat/starch like potato or rice/veggie for dinner every night (besides pasta night/"brinner" night). I mostly make my own marinades for meat with herbs I grow/extra virgin olive oil. I don't follow specific recipes--I just throw together what sounds good in the moment. lol. It doesn't require a ton of prep time/ingredients though.

  • I only cook on Sundays and holidays. The rest of the time I'm just trying to get something hot and edible on the table.

I was raised on a farm like this - I loved it and I wish sometimes that I was raising LO that way too!

  • Unless it involves a crock pot I typically cook. I love cooking though. The only exception is if I am just making food for myself.

  • To me it's all cooking unless the meal is prepackaged and or already cooked and you are heating it up. I cook. Every day except Friday. I'm a SAHM now, but I always cooked. I love cooking. Cleaning I hate and avoid until I absolutely have to do it. So, there's that.
  • I make food. I'm not a good cook.

  • My best friend thrives on cooking. I hate it. I find it stressful. When I do, it's quite an event, and I expect appropriate recognition. So yeah, mostly I "make food". Or better yet, my husband does. :)

  • If DH is in town I cook, most of the time, unless we are really busy or feel like going out.  When DH is OOT I make food for DS1 and I.  It's too much work to cook for just myself and a picky toddler.  I love to cook, though, so when DH is around I take advantage of the extra time.
