Re: Plugged Duct...

  • If you aren't already, I would at least pump on the side she won't take so that you can get that release and relief. I also massage my breasts at every pumping session to make sure I get everything out. That's really the only advice I can give, becuase it hasn't happened to me.

  • Use heat.  Either take a hot shower and hand express in the shower or feed right thereafter.  Or use a heating pad or hot compress and press on the duct before and/or during feeding or pumping.  You can also try dangle feeding, get on your hands and knees over baby or lay her in your lap and lean over so that gravity can help.  You can also take ibuprofen for the pain and swelling.  GL, I hope it clears up soon.

  • I'm the queen of plugged ducts. Fortunately it hasn't gotten any worse, but I can't recall 24 straight hours without at least one lump (hopefully starting my first experience of a plugged free life today).

Often the lump will go away at the next feeding, give her the breast with thelump first. But, If you have the time, use a warm compress ("they" say to use warm heat - washcloth, paper towel or actually run water into a clean diaper, microwave it and put the inside part on your breast. A few minutes is enough.

Then nurse right after pointing LO's chin toward the lump - if its on the inside/midline of your breast lay LO sideways, if its on the bottom or exterior side of breast use football hold. I've had to get creative a few times with the positioning to help with a particularly stubborn lump that was on the top of my breast by laying with my face at her knees and having DH help me line up (picture a 69 position).

Massage the breast a lump while LO nurses starting from your chest toward the nipple. This sometimes hurts like a mother.

If this hasn't helped try using heat, massage, and pump after you nurse. Lean forward and "dangle" to use gravity to your benefit.

I started using lecithin supplements to help since I get so many lumps, but it doesn't sound like you're there yet.

lastly, relax. It hurts and it sucks, but it will go away. Some times they can take a full day to get rid of. A LC I spoke with told me that if it didn't go away after 2 days to call her back and come in for help - I've never gotten one longer than a 1.5 days. I can't sleep on my back bc that'll make some lumps, and when I sleep on my side I support my breasts as much as I can to the weight doesn't cause anything. I've been taking the lecithin for 2 days and this morning was the first time in many weeks that I woke up without a lump!

    GL!
