Flu shot?

Watched the news this morning and can't believe how bad influenza is this year. Apparently 5 people in my state have died? I didn't get a flu shot, but I usually never do. Isn't there a special version of it that you're supposed to get when Pg? And do they have that at Walgreens? Or should I just wait and talk to the doc at my first spot next Thurs?

Re: Flu shot?

  • You just need to get the vaccine without preservatives in it. I got my shot at Walgreens, but many chains carry it. Just call around and ask- they don't have as many of those kinds as the regular, but you should be able to find a store that has it.

  • My doctor reccomended a flu shot and a tetanus shot as soon as I got pregnant. I received my flu shot at 13 weeks. She also reccomended them for my husband.
  • I'm surprised some of PPs OB's haven't recommended one. I happened to get one right before I got pregnant, but my OB definitely checked and I think I would have gotten a lengthy lecture if I had refused one in his office or elsewhere.

  • I asked my OB for one at my first OB apt, but he said I needed to wait until I was in the 2nd tri. Also I had a little cold so he said I couldn't have it anyway.

Me too. I get asked every time I go in. I had my shot way back at the end of September, maybe the beginning of October. Well before I got my BFP. Glad I was proactive this year so it was done.

  • Hey y'all. I'm new here but thought I'd mention that I heard a report about this crazy flu epidemic just a few minutes ago where they warned that the flu shot doesn't seem to be doing much; there have been multiple cases reported of confirmed flu in people who had already had the shot, so sounds like it's a different strain than the vaccine makers planned for?

Not to say don't get the shot, but still take the normal precautions too!
  • I'm getting it at my next appointment at 14 weeks. Until then I'm just avoiding going out too much in crowded places. Washing hands a ton and being extra careful until I can get my shot.

My OB and midwife wanted me to wait until 2nd trimester as well as an added precaution. I admit the reports frighten me considerably.

Carla, I love you.  Get out of my head!  I was also reading this surprised that pregnant women have not been told to get one.  It was my understanding that its very important to get the flu shot when you're pregnant.  I got mine just a few days before I got my surprise BFP.  At my first OB visit he asked me if I had my flu shot and was impressed and pleased that I already had.

  • The preservative and mercury free is the one for pg women.  Walgreens or other pharmacies should have them still.  I personally wouldn't wait any longer and go get it.

This. I found it at Walgreens as well. The flu is brutal this year, so I would definitely go get a shot to protect you and your baby.

There are two main strains this year,  one is in the flu shot and one is not.   The one tht's not seems to be low grade fever/flu like symptoms for a few days, and coughing & fatigue for a couple weeks.

While getting the flu while pregnant is not good, you probably won't die of it. Many people don't realise that the flu is a disease that causes many, many deaths on a yearly basis - my grandfather died of it. However, most of these are elderly people who were having health issues already, or people with an otherwise heavily compromised immune system. While we all should be aware of the dangers of the flu, in healthy women, even pregnant ones, flu is usually not deadly.

I'm pretty scared myself. I live in Belgium, and they don't give vaccines to women in 1st tri. The peak of flu season is approaching here, and I'm done waiting, getting my vaccine this Friday. Still, it will take two weeks to work... Talk about a 2ww.

There's a lot of new years cocktail events going on, and I felt a bit silly about not attending them because of the flu. But now that I read all of your replies, I definitely don't mind taking a nap at home instead.

  • My doctor said my husband and I should both get flu shots. I got a preservative free one at Walgreen's on Sunday. Just call first because a friend who is a pharmacist at Walgreens told me they do not stock a lot of the preservative free ones, but will order one for you. I was lucky that they had one left and held it for me.

  • We have it spreading around our community right now. I work in a hospital, and last week, between call outs and admissions, we were at a critical staffing need. A few weeks ago I had a minor cold and of course I have some lingering m/s, but I got my flu shot at the beginning of my pregnancy and have been otherwise fine. I am a nurse, so I am exposed to ill people all the time. I do what I can to prevent getting sick. I have lots of friends who are complaining of flu symptoms, but they didn't get their shots.
