swelling led to a clot

So I've always had a vein that kind of pops out at the side of my knee has gotten worse with my leg swelling with each of my pregnancies. About 3 weeks ago (~3 weeks after delivery) my swelling in my legs had mostly resolved except for that one vein and it began getting hard. Initially thought it was still just inflamed since my leg wasn't swollen or anything but was starting to get worried about it.

So had my 6 week check yesterday and had OB take a look at it.  He agreed that it wasn't normal but wasn't 100% sure what it was-a clot, cyst, lypoma so we decided to try and see if he could drain it. It ended up being an enlarged vein which had indeed partially clot thus why it didn't go back down when the rest of my veins did. So now I'm stuck with an ace wrapped leg to attempt to help compress the vein to keep the swollen section down. Stinky part is it's sore from the incision and the ace wrap keeps bunching in the back.

Apparently I was the excitement for the day according to my OB as there's not too many days he get to use a scalpel on someone's leg :)

  • I'm glad they found out about the clot now before you had more serious problems.

  • Well, at least you gave your doctor some excitement ;-)

I developed a DVT after I had my second child.  That was scary and being on blood thinners for much of the last four years hasn't been fun either!  Yours sounds like a clot in a superficial vein so that's at least a little bit of good news.

    Hope it feels better soon.

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
