No babywash or soap, ever.

I have a friend who has dry, sensitive skin. Her daughter was born at the end of July. She only uses water for her DD's bath. Her daugher has never been washed with soap. I get that baby wash/soap is drying, and her child hasn't been out rolling in the mud or playing basketball after eating raw onions, but what about her bottom?

 What do yall think?

Re: No babywash or soap, ever.

  • Does she use baby wipes?

I probably only use soap in about 50% of DS's baths. It's the hair that kinda smells if I don't wash it with soap. His butt? Water is plenty good for cleaning it.

  • Water should be sufficient, even for the bum.
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • I think it's fine.  Babies don't get really dirty, and if the baby isn't eating solids, I wouldn't even be very concerned about the butt.  PP makes a good point, if she uses wipes, the butt is probably clean enough.

Personally, I plan to use soap on my LO, but not at every bath.

  • I think that for a 6 month old, it's fine.  She probably uses something at diaper changes, be it wipes or something else friendly to the kid's skin.

Don't you have anything else to concern yourself with?

I thought it was mildly gross. And the board was slow! Thx sofamonkey for putting me in my place. :>)

    Confused

There are these things called books.  You can buy them from a store or look at them & glean their info for free at these things called libraries.  Or there is google.  All of these vessels provide information.  It is quite common for young kids to not use soap, esp. if they have skin sensitivities.

  • We rarely use body wash, only if she has been playing outside. But I always use shampoo conditioner, her hair is always a tangly mess!
  • C is 2 and while we do use soap, it's very little due to his skin issues.

  • I think it's a tad gross, but if her baby doesnt stink or look dirty who cares! When DD was a baby esp 6 mos and under she got maybe 2 baths a week.
  • My dd has very sensitive skin but loves to bathe every day. I just don't soap/shampoo her daily.
  • I see no problem with it.

  • I see nothing wrong with this. My little guy still has yet to have a bath. We passed on it in the hospital and just haven't done it yet. We may once the cord falls off.

  • Know what's a great solvent?

    Water.

  Not my style. I like perfumey bath products and homemade beeswax lotion and stuff but I guess I wouldn't consider it much of my business. . .

  • I'm a weirdo that likes the use of plenty of soap, so yes, my DD has soap in every bath since she's been born.  I don't know about kids with dry skin, but I would probably be cautious about my hot water and soap use if it dried out DD's skin.

  • You'd probably get more of a reaction from a different board. See, we're seasoned parents here. If they have made it through an hour in one piece we consider the entire day a success.

This is true.  Go shock the socks off of 3-6 months.

Then again I freaked a few of them out when I said we do not bathe little guy until his cord falls off. They thought that was icky.

ha! We only wiped her down with a sponge bath until hers fell off.  No stinky baby neck! We didn't give her a full on bath until hers fell off.

I don't have the best memory of this time, but if feel like we didn't give anything more than a wash cloth wipe down until DD's cord fell off either, but I feel like that was doctor instructed though. I don't think I would have cooked that one up on my own.

We didn't give Ash a bath until the cord fell off either...like a week and a half? I though you weren't supposed to until the cord fell off anyway, am I wrong?

Yeah, I don't really use soap on Ash unless he was particularly sweaty before the bath (my kids are space heaters), I really only wash his hair with soap.

    ETF quoting issues.

The most he has gotten is that initial rub down. No water or soap has touched him other than on his butt. No stinky neck yet though. Luckily his cord should fall off soon.

The hospital told us not to bath DS for the first month.  They said just wipe him down as needed was suffificent.

My kids had baths while in the hospital.

DD had a bath after birth, the doctors told us to wipe her down but not to put her in water until after the cord fell off.

Yes I forgot to say they both got a bath immediately after birth.  I always thought you were not to give them a bath until after the cord falls off.  You want the cord to dry out.  Soaking in a tub will just rehydrate that thing.

  • DD got a bath on day two in the hospital, then just sponge baths until the cord fell off.

Hey, check this.  While I used soap, I think my kid had a bath less than once a week for her first 8 or 9 months of life.

We passed on the bath in the hospital. They had to wear rubber gloves to handle the baby the whole time. We just wanted to wait, that and the vernix is really good for their skin. It's weird, but you would never know unless we told ya.
