"talking"

Do your LOs talk? Say words/identify things, and know what they are saying?

My DS says mama, dada, hot, light, baba, but not consistently or at the right times. IE playing with his books last night, just him and I home and he starts saying "dada" over and over. Says "Hot" at random times, never when something is hot.

When do they start connecting the word and the thing?

Re: "talking"

  • Aria definitely knows "mama" and "dada" and uses them all the time. She'll also say "pup pup" and "ba ba" (for puppy and bottle), but she's not as consistent with those.

Right now, she's doing this (really cute!) thing where she searches the whole house for "Da DAAAAA" while he's at work. She'll go into each room and look for him, and yell. When he doesn't answer, she'll go to the next. I bet we check the whole house 10 times a day. Then, when he comes home from work, she crawls mach speeed to him yelling "Da Da! Da Daaaa!" and laughing. I LOVE it, and so does hubs. Smile

  • DD babbles a lot and makes sounds. She has said no discernible words yet. I think it's great your LO is even saying actual words!

Also, when your LO is saying "hot" maybe you just think it is the word "hot" when it's just a sound to LO and not a word, if that makes sense. LO could also be trying to say another word that rhymes with "hot" and that's just how it's coming out. Just a thought.

That's what I was thinking. Makes perfect sense. I'm wondering where people draw the line between senseless babble and "words". Because he says words in senseless babble, if that makes sense. lol he will repeat them if we say them to him, but he doesn't offer them in relation to the object described. He "learned" hot because he always points to the light in any room as soon as we walk in, he LOVES lights. He kept trying to reach for my parents hanging potlights one day while I had him sitting on the counter, and I told them they were Hot and made a big deal reaching towards them and saying "ouch! Hot!" so now he points to lights and says "dite. hot."... that's the most "accurate" he gets with his "words" other than that it seems jsut babble.

  • Caroline knows "mama", "dada", "uh oh", and "doe" (dog). I know she knows she is saying dog because she gets so excited and starts pointing at them saying "doe, doe, doe".  She understand a lot more words but isn't saying them yet.  She also just started saying "mmmm" when she is eating.  She thinks she is so funny when she does it.  Other than that it's all just random noises

  • Allison babbles a lot...I mean a LOT!  Nothing really is sticking yet but I think she is starting to get mama and dada.  I just love listening to her have conversations with her toys though...so stinking cute!

    My thoughts too.....

I pretty much consider it babble right now. If Reece looks at me and says Mama, then I know. He's done that a handful of times.  He does give the best kisses though!!  I was rocking him the other night and he was pretty much asleep... then he popped his head up, turned his head and gave me a kiss on the cheek (open mouth slobbery kiss) and put his head back down to sleep. It was the cutest thing EVER!!

  • Lucia says 'mmmmm' when she's eating or pretending to eat. Otherwise it's all just babbling. Sometimes we think she knows what dada and mama mean, but other times they just seem random.

  • Laura understands words like Daddy, Momma, Kitty cat, Elmer, etc - you ask her where a pet or parent is, and she starts looking until she finds them. She doesn't say more than "kkkkk" when she sees the cat, though. I can't wait until she can express herself more.

  • Belle says "ba ba" for bottle. She hasn't said DaDa yet-DH is really hoping that'll happen soon. He tries every day to get her to say it. Her first word was "MaMa" but she hasn't said it much since she mastered it. Yet, she knows who mama and dada are. She also knows ball as I'll say go get the ball in a room full of toys and she'll bring back one of her many balls she loves to play with. We play catch often. At first she'd say "Ka" when I'd say catch and once and only once she said "catch"....but, I think it was just coincidence. Also, when I say "all done" she'll repeat "Ga da" in the same tone. I believe that's her way of saying it...even if DH thinks it's just babbling. It's so exciting to watch them learn all of these new words. Our LOs are getting SO big!!

  • J says "mama," "dada," "byebye," "baba (for bottle, but only to the babysitter, because she is the one who gives him bottles,)" and "deedee," which is his stuffed penguin, Petey. I know he knows what those words mean. Beyond that, it's just sounds.

  • DS understands Mommy, Daddy and kitty.  He'll say mama and dada, but not consistently.  He cant say kitty, but he cracks up every time he sees one of the cats.  He also loves to hear and repeat the Nittany Lion sound.  My parents have a magnet on their fridge, and if you ask him where the lion is, he will look for it, and then go over to it.  Then we'll make the roar sound, and he tries to repeat it.  So.stinking.cute.

  • DS has a few words, mama, dada, doggie, hungry, done, Addie (DD), mo (for more, but he doesn't say it often and sometimes signs it instead of saying it),uh oh and his most recent, uh huh.  These are things he uses correctly.  He randomly says things that are words to me but mean nothing to him. He also uses hungry either incorrectly sometimes or perhaps he is just always hungry.

  • Ian's not really a talker.  And he doesn't really babble either.  He's more of a noise maker than a talker (he likes to growl, makes clicky noises, blows raspberries).  He does say bye bye and Mama in context.  However, he'll say Dada but I know that's not in context because his Dada isn't around.  I think the "timing" on talking really varies from kid to kid.  My mom said that my older sister could literally carry on a conversation at 10 months old, but my little sister didn't really talk until she was almost 3 (she communicated with my older sister and she translated for her, weird! lol).  I think it really just depends on the LO.  The fact that your LO is practicing and can say things is on track with expected milestones, don't fret.  I bet sooner, rather than later, you'll be thinking does this kiddo ever stop talking?  LOL

  • Eli knows mama, dada, kkk (Keeko), nnn(Neeko, our dogs) and fishes. He also has other distinctive babble, like right now his favorite thing to say is "tikka tikka". But, the rest is babble. He's just recently started to point at EVERYTHING and want to know what it is. So when he points at my mom I'll say "Grandma" and he'll either babble something right on (Grrrmmmaa) or completely off. But I think it's alright because either way he's trying to understand and speak.

  • Skyler says dada, mama, mom and bye bye.  She definitely knows who mama and dada is and always says it in the right context.  She will sometimes say bye bye and wave when leaving but not always.  She is working on thank you right now, it sounds more like tha choo, but she repeats it when I say it.  Yesterday my mom handed her something and she said tha choo, so I think she sort of gets it.

Otherwise I will say the rest is babble that sometimes sounds like words.

I've read multiple places that say around 12 months is when most babies start understanding a lot of what you say to them. That's about 5 weeks away for us, and I find that hard to imagine. Still, it seems like developmentally that this is the area he is growing the most, so maybe it will happen.

Cody understands a few words and phrases and is beginning to say some of them on his own at the right time. This weekend his babbling changed all of a sudden and now instead of repetitive sounds, it sounds like he's talking. Sunday night, DH had a back and forth conversation with him and it sounded like he was trying to answer. He wasn't saying the right things, but it almost sounded like he was saying phrases he hears frequently, like "good boy," "you bet," etc. I was dying! So cute!

Funny you say that... I feel like lately Reece listens to me and tries to understand what I'm saying. I feel like I'm on the verge of communicating with him on another level.

  • Ava babbles all the time, but the only words she really says are Dada or Dad, definitely in reference to DH, Hi sometimes when she sees people and last week said "Ock" for sock a few times.  She can also say Mama for me, but chooses not to!

  • They say "mama" and "dada" to us, but they also use those sounds very often at random times.  I swear that Olivia has said "all done" twice when done with her meal and my mom was there once and said it sounded like that as well, but I think she was using her "yes, dear, whatever you say" voice, so who knows.  I say "all done" whenever I'm finished feeding them so it's not outside of the realm of possibility.  They don't say anything else yet but they babble constantly.  They babble to each other a lot and I wonder if they'll have their own way of communicating.

We've noticed lately that they seem to understand us a lot more in the recent weeks.  Natalia had her cup on the ground and wanted to be picked up and I said "can you hand me your cup first?" and she did.  We were playing with cars on the kitchen floor on Monday and I kept asking them to bring me the cars so I could make them go again and they listened.  I'm trying to get into the habit of asking them to do something instead of doing it myself and they're starting to do more.  Natalia knocked my deodorant off of my nightstand this morning and H asked her to put it back and she did!  Then she yanked all of the papers off, but still...

  • I feel as though L understands a ton of what we say to her, but she does not "talk" back to us in a way that makes sense. She babbles and there are a few times she's said dada, mama, and baba for our dog where it was pretty clear she was making the connection but she doesn't do that consistently by any means.

She knows who mama, dada, and Boom are and will point at our photos when prompted. She can pick out the pig and cow from her puzzle if you ask. She knows how to pat and touch point and she knows "come here please" and "open your mouth." And she will clap and dance on command without us making the motions ourselves. And she definitely knows what "no" means but there's only a 50/50 chance she'll listen to that one :
