Help- Extended Nursing- Weaning hormones

Hi ladies,  I know I don't post often in here, but I could really use some advice or even just some encouragment that this gets better.

My son is just over 2.5 and we fully weaned 10 days ago.  It was a very gradual thing- he was down to nursing just before bed and occassionally in the morning. About 10 days ago I was putting him to bed and he was looking at his dreamlite and never asked to nurse, so I went with it.  I was ready to wean soon so I don't feel like I'm emotional over the actual weaning, but my hormones are going CRAZY.

I am so irratible and feel like I could cry at the drop of a pin.  My dad passed away about a month ago and I had an early miscarriage about 3 weeks ago, so I know that feeling emotional would be expected, but it seems like since weaning my my emotions are OVER THE TOP (sorry for the all caps, but seriously it is awful).

If you experienced post weaning hormonal craze, please share with me how long it took before you felt normal again...and please let me know if there was anything in the meantime that seemed to help you feel less like a basket case.

Re: Help- Extended Nursing- Weaning hormones

  • ((hugs)) mama.  I'm so sorry for your losses, both a dad and a miscarriage - regardless of weaning you (should/would) be feeling emotional...

I think talking to someone may help - when I had my miscarriage, I reached out to a local support group at a hospital.  Depending on your insurance/life situation/schedule...maybe you could look into a little counseling if you are feeling absolutely overwhelmed.  I'm still nursing so I don't have advice to the exact question you posted, but for me after the miscarriage, my hormones were all over the place.  Put that on top of grieving, and it was very intense.  You have the passing of your father and weaning to come into play as well, I'd say be sure to take care of yourself because you are dealing with a lot.  Getting out and walking a bit, a little exercise helps me when I'm feeling out of balance.  Meditation, taking extra help from your partner etc.  ((hugs)) and good luck.

Thanks October_artist.  I'm sorry for your loss too.  I love that you mentioned a little exercise- I seriously could use some of that these days- maybe I'll get the treadmill dusted off and see if I can get those endorphins to kick in :)  Honestly- I'll try just about anything to start feeling normal again.  Maybe our hospital has a support group too...thanks again!
