Big kid bed.

I converted the crib to a toddler bed for DS's nap this morning.  I think that maybe it's going okay.  I ordered his big boy bed yesterday. He is growing up too fast. The new bed is really low profile and very mod looking. It's about as high off the ground as the toddler bed but takes a twin mattress. So now my plan is to start making him a quilt for his new big bed.   I am thinking I am going to do a space theme.  I am pretty excited about it actually.

Re: Big kid bed.

  • DS would never stay in a big boy bed. You are brave!

DD is still in her crib by choice. I think she will stay in there until she has to bend her legs to sleep, LOL.

  • Agreed with jonny. You are a brave woman.

I'm hoping to keep DD in her crib until kindergarten.

  • I have a rule, once they can throw a leg over the rail it's time for a bed.  I would rather have to chase the kid around versus a head injury.  DD took about 2 days to get her transitioned.  DS is more active who know how it will go.

  • DD could have climbed out over a year ago if she wanted but she has never even tried. DS will be another story altogether.

This! My DD is still in her crib, and we don't have any plans to change her over in the near future. If DS were free (meaning not contained in his crib at night) he'd be up all.night.long running around.

You are one brave mama! It makes me nervous thinking about doing it with my DD, nevermind my DS!

  • Our crib lowers to a level E wouldn't be able to climb out until she's in kindergarten. I can't imagine her in a toddler bed. She would jet up and wander around the house at night.

  • I love all the different opinions on this!

I planned on giving the new baby DS's crib an borrowing the one that my mom has for A but DH told me maybe we should switch him to the toddler bed, which we already had. He doesn't try and climb out of the crib and I could totally see him roaming the house so I don't think he's quite ready.

  • I was gonna say you are a brave mama! B would be out of that bed so fast, I can't even imagine! However if he is crawling out of the crib as is, I agree the toddler bed is the way to go!

  • N never took to his crib so we put a full sized mattress on the floor for him around a year and that is where is stays. He never leaves.  When he wakes up, he crawls to the end of the bed and reads a book or cries and waits for us.  I guess since he's never know anything different, he doesn't roam?  In the house he's a mad man, lunging for the stairs or dog bed or (whatever he isn't supposed to get into) but in bed, he sits tight.  We're going to buy him a low profile frame or transition him to his toddler bed at some point.  I'm just nervous he'll roll out, since he's used to having so much space.  Good luck with your transition!  I hope it's as smooth as mine!

  • Naptime was interesting.  It took forever to get him down for his nap.  However bedtime was just like any other night. It took a few days for DD to transition to the toddler bed.  I am patient.
