Update: BOTH boys are getting helmets!

Update from a previous post seeking encouragement for plagiocephaly. I took LO for his consult today and sure enough they're suggesting a helmet. She looked at other LO too and suggested he get one too!! He has a moderate flat spot (that frankly I don't even see but DH and others do) but she said it can only help. We decided that as long as insurance covers it we will do it since one LO needs it anyway we might as well get them both corrected. I can't say I'm upset, but I am overwhelmed. This is after finding out on Thursday that my LO with the severe flat spot needs surgery on his peepee for a condition called chordee. Essentially it's a curvature of the penis. We found out when we took him to the urologist for his circ at 8 weeks (he couldn't have it done in the nicu). They said to recheck him at 6 mths and now we find out he needs surgery, will be put fully under for it, and needs a helmet. I'm so overwhelmed and sad for my baby(ies) that I could just cry. Oh and on top of it, hubby just got a promotion (awesome news), but we will be moving 1200 miles away in 3 months....with 9 month olds and until we go he will be traveling every week for 3-4 days. Sigh.

Re: Update: BOTH boys are getting helmets!

  • My daughter, who is now 2, had a helmet.  It was so hard at first but you will get used to it quickly.  After a while it will be strange to even see them with the helmet off.  I am in a plagiocephaly support group on facebook, you might find it helpful to join.  It is very supportive and they have good tips and info.

  • We are SO happy with our helmet! I highly recommend CranialTech if you have a location near you. My husband painted it to look like R2D2 so having it look fun really makes me feel better about it. Start getting creative with decoration ideas! After only 11 days of wearing it I am noticing a huge difference in his head shape, I am so incredibly glad we got it.

I'm sorry about your son needing surgery. I have no experience but I pray it goes smoothly.

that is so good to hear bc I see your lo's are 9 months. They said the "ideal" time to put it in was 4-7 months and since they're 6 I was freaking that it would take double time to work. The only part that makes me sad is knowing that the remaining months of them being a baby will be in helmets. I'm just so overwhelmed with emotion on everything.

Thanks to the other ladies too and for the referral to the Facebook support page. I'm definitely looking into that!!

  • It sounds like you have a lot on your plate -- at least with the helmet issue, I can understand the emotional ups and downs. My son just graduated out of his helmet last week. He was twin A, on the bottom, squished the whole pregnancy, and had quite a distorted back side of his head. We prepared ourselves for the long haul but he only wound up being in it for about 10 weeks. He got it at about 5 months old.The improvement is dramatic, amazing, we're thrilled!  It definitely took some time to sink in, and I felt bad for him if people stared. I don't think he was very bothered by it. The best I can offer is to just make him feel like it's normal. And you might just get a break from all those weird twin questions in public! ;)

  • I'm so sorry for all that has been thrown at you recently.  My only advise it to take it one step at a time.  It seems overwhelming now, but you will get through this.

yes they were 33 seekers. I didn't even think of that. Makes me feel even better :). She wasn't concerned about the timing at all, she said his plates are still soft and it's great timing I was just thinking worst case scenario. I am REALLY hoping for a best case scenario.

That's sort of our scenario, just reversed. Twin b (my "severe" guy) pushed out twin a, so he was born with severe torticolis and had a bad flat spot. Through exercising him, it corrected itself almost overnight and he has only a moderate positional spot now. Twin b's flat spot came on out if no where between 3-4 months which makes me feel like I'm to blame and I just feel so bad for him. I'm SO hoping for a fast recovery. I'm really hoping to have it off before we move so they can meet our family without them on. I'm anxious too about the stares, especially since its going to be both of them. They're lucky they're gorgeous so that makes up for it :)

  • Sorry you are dealing with so much right now. I was overwhelmed when I found both of ours needed helmets. Initially like you, we thought it would just be one. My son also had PT for torticollis.

We had two in helmets for about 2.5 months. The appointments were the most difficult thing. The helmets weren't that bad and didnt bother my two at all. There's a picture of them in their caps on my blog right now, LIS.

Not sure where you live, but we went through a local childrens specialty hospital here in the twin cities.

  • WOW! What an adventure you are having! I hope everything turns out okay, lots of faith and prayers!!!!

On a lighter note a really good friend of mine had the same issue with one of her boys, and he wore a helmet. Honestly it was the cutest thing ever and better for a flat spot than other reasons! Hang in there and here's to hoping the light at the end of the tunnel shines through! Corny I know :)

  • The helmets are so much more common nowadays that I don't think people necessarily jump to weird conclusions about it - I just think they don't want to say the wrong thing in case there was something developmentally wrong, etc. (and we still did get people saying weird stuff - some honestly thought we just put it on for kicks, or that he was pretending to be a football player, no joke). I always appreciated when someone would say hello to the kids and just treat my son like it wasn't even there. I was completely honest with people if they asked, just to help normalize it. It's great to have it past us, and before he got it on I was really anxious about it, but we fell into a routine with it and it just became a part of life. At the end of tunnel you'll feel so good about having it behind you with the results it will yield :)
