Toddler bed?

Can we talk toddler bed transition? What is your plan if you have one?

I don't want to buy a new crib for baby #2 so we are going to transition Max out of the crib before he/she is here. I don't know if I should get a toddler bed or just try a regular bed.

Re: Toddler bed?

  • We're not even remotely ready for a bed right now, but I'm pretty sure when we are, we're going with a toddler bed. Q is all over the place when he sleeps. He would just fall right out of a real bed.

  • We had a toddler bed given to us, so that's what we went to after the crib. I liked the idea of moving her to a bed the same size as the crib, I think the small space made her feel cozy and secure, and we kept using the same sheets, so it was familiar. But if it hadn't been given to us I'm not sure I would have spent the money on it since it's used for such a short time. DD1 has been in it about a year and will be done with it next week when we put bunk beds in her room!

ETA: DD1 transitioned to the toddler bed at 23 months. We set it up in her new room thinking we'd give her a few weeks to get used to the idea and move her when she turned 2, but she chose to sleep in it right away. It was a very easy transition for us.

  • Our crib  transitions to a toddler bed. But if I had to buy a new bed, I'd just get a twin, and probably put the mattress on the floor at first. I wouldn't buy a toddler bed, since you'll have to replace it later anyways.

  • C's crib is convertible so when we feel he is ready we will just convert his crib to a toddler bed.  I don't plan on changing it any time soon.  he is all over the place when he starts to wake up.  Plus when he wakes in the middle of the night he stands up and waits for me to go in and lay him back down.  I'd be terrified he would stand up and fall on the floor.

  • I used to say that I wanted Aug out of his crib before a #2 would come along because I didn't want to buy a 2nd crib.  But this surprise pregnany kind of changes things because he'll only be 21 months when #2 is born.

With him being that young and all the changes of bringing home a baby, I'm going to give it time and make the change this fall.

My girlfriend is giving me a crib to use so not having to buy a 2nd crib makes this situation SOOOO much easier.

  • We have two cribs, they both convert to toddler beds and queen size, even if we had them further apart I would have purchased another crib because I like that they convert.

We wouldn't do a toddler size if I had no choice, I'd go straight to twin.

  • We've never tried a toddler bed. We usually keep them in the crib as long as possible. But...I'd probably just get a twin and put it on the floor if I were you and skip the toddler bed.

We're probably going to keep Benny in the crib after #5 comes. #5 will be sleeping in our room for a while. Not sure who will move where when the time comes. It depends on the sex of #5. This sounds so silly, I'm going to start a new thread in a minute.

  • Max's crib converts into a toddler bed and then into a full size bed. Maybe I'll just buck up and get another crib. I have a queen sized bed in the guest room right now which will be Max's new room.
  • Zero plans to transition her any time soon.  I want a place to stick her for as long as possible.  We have a crib that will covert to a full when the time comes, which we will do with side rails. She moves waaaay too much for us to even consider it now.

  • The more I think about it, it is probably wise for us to keep him in his crib as long as possible. I think I'll just see how things are in a few months! Max's crib wasn't expensive at all or I may be able to borrow one from my friends.

I think that is a good idea! That way you know exactly where Max is when you are taking care of #2!

We will go straight to a full. I AM DYING to get him a nice bedroom set from PBK. I went less exstravagant for Bo's nursery so I could justify to my H why I wanted to go big with furniture for his childhood! sneaky-sneaky mommy!

  • I'm starting to think that buying another crib is the best idea for us, too. We borrowed my SIL's crib the first time we had 2u2, but it's old and cribs have changed too much. I think some $150 Walmart crib is prob all we need to keep my two babies safe for as long as possible. Amazing how much less time I take making these decisions than I did with my first!

Moosey, were you the one who said you might move D and the crib to the new room first? I think that sounds like the right thing to do. It's kinda like breaking up the big transition into two smaller ones. And you might afford yourself some flexibility that way...since you don't want any big changes right when the baby's born. (Smaller change might be tolerated closer to baby's birth than a big one could be)

D has been in the Toddler bed since Thanksgiving.  She does really well at bedtime but naps have been a struggle.  At daycare she is in a cot & I think she sleeps well for them cause she sees the other kids lying down.  At home we try to take a nap on the weekends in the bed but I always end up putting her in the crib.  We haven't taken it apart yet.  I want to but I also want her to nap at home.  I guess I just need to bight the bullet & be firm!
