My first OB appt!

Hey future mommies!

So I have my first OB appt. today after graduating from the RE 2 weeks ago! Yay! What should I expect from today? My doctor is a high risk doc and she does ultrasounds at every appt. so I know I'll definitely have an u/s.

I feel really overwhelmed bc after I got KU, the RE never sat down to tell me what to expect and couldn't really answer too many of my questions. I've just gone off what I read on here or in my Mayo Clinic book really.

So what were your first OB appt likes?

TIA and Happy Hump Day! :)

Re: My first OB appt!

  • The first appt is usually administrative more of a "get to know you" interview between you and the doc, find out your family medical history, talk about future appts and first trimester events like ultrasounds and screenings, and what to expect as far as that goes. They'll probably give you a goodie bag with loads of samples for pregnancy magazines, prenatal vitamins, ads for cordblood banking, formula, diapers, etc. They will also likely give you a prescription for prenatal vitamins, and one for the preliminary bloodwork you'll have done, assuming you havent already been through that withthe RE?. And they'll go over any special circumstances you may have facing you.

You might not actually have a physical exam until your second appt.

    Thank you for your response.

I take specific prenatals with an extra supplement bc I'm MTHFR - I don't absorb FA. I also haven't had a physical exam at all. The RE only checks to make sure the pregnancy is viable so she did weekly ultrasounds from week 6-9 and I'm on progesterone still.

Should I ask for a physical exam if they don't do one? I feel like I'm far enough that I should have one already?

  • I don't think it's crucial unless you think there's something unusual going on. They'll do it when they think its necessary. They may also do a quick breast exam if you haven't had one recently.
