Crock pot fail

Last week DH went grocery shopping and I told him to buy chicken breast. I always use boneless, skinless, but DH came home with 2 5 lb trays of bone-in and skin-on. Then I got to figure out what to do with it.

Yesterday I put it in the crock pot to cook, with plans to de-bone it after the kids went to bed. Unfortunately, DS has been so cranky I forgot about it and went to bed as soon as DS did.

When I saw it in the fridge this morning, I thought, "Oh good. DH put it in for me when he left for work." As he goes to work at 4 and our crock pot has a keep warm setting, I figured it would be okay. And it would have been, if DH hadn't turned it off last night when it beeped.

So there goes 5 pounds of meat into the trash. Maybe I'll have better luck with the second tray.

Anyone else have any baby/husband-related cooking fails?

Re: Crock pot fail

  • DH does the grocery shopping and always messes something up. This week, he only bought one package of ricotta cheese. I needed 2 to double the recipe. I'm making lasagna roll ups and wanted to freeze a batch, since it's so easy to double.

No problem. He had some errands to run sans baby on Monday, and was already going somewhere 2 miles from a grocery store. Pick it up then. Nope. He forgot.

This morning, I asked if he could swing by the store on his way between jobs (he has a 3 hour window between them) to pick it up. He asked me if I could send him a text to remind him. Seriously? It was 6:30. His break is at 9:30. And he passes several grocery stores on the way back home.

    I still sent a text.

Katfco: My DH does the cooking and shopping.  I have had numerous kitchen fails, which is only one of many reasons my DH does the cooking.  I have seriously almost started a fire 2 times :-P

  • Steel--DH does occasionally do stuff like that, but usually he's pretty good about it. For a while he was the one doing all the shopping, so he got used to it. He just doesn't really understand how cooking works so he doesn't always get why there's a difference.

Jessandandy--My mom was famous for melting things on the stove. She had tons of Tupperware and sometimes dirty dishes would just get put in a spare pot on the stove if we didn't have time to get to the dishes before dinner. With a gas stove, the heat spreads, so more than once we would end up with melted cups, lids and (of course) spatulas. You'd think we'd learn after the first time, but no.

Sadly, DH has done the grocery shopping since I got KU. He still gets things wrong every time.

On my way home, I called to see if he could boil the noodles and defrost the spinach so that all I had to do was mix the stuffing together and roll up the lasagna roll ups. Sure! He did make the noodles, but he also drenched them in oil "so they wouldn't stick." Ugh. My lasagna roll ups were lasagna slide arounds until we figure out how to wipe off all of the freaking oil he soaked the noodles in! His mom always puts oil in her pasta, so I should have known better.

When DH and I had been married about a year, I was cooking some noodles one day and asked him to keep an eye on the pot and turn it off when it was done. I went in a while later to see a boiling, goopy mess on the burner and when I asked him about it, he said, "I thought you had to boil it until all the water was gone, like rice." I was particularly annoyed because we were living in China at the time, so pasta was hard to come by and pricey.

I hope your roll ups ended up well.
