"GTKY- Does your DH have a favorite Splurge/Hobby? "

Does your DH have any splurges or hobby's that he enjoys and costs money to do?

Mine loves gardening in the summer, and he brews beer all year round. Brewing is NOT a cheap hobby either. We Garden together in the summer, but brewing is totally 100% his hobby.  Well thats not true, I have to sanitize the bottles in the dish washer for him while he's at work. (this is what prompted the questioning)

  • Not really anything I'd consider very expensive... He likes to play video games, but probably only buys a couple a year.  He might play twice or three times a week.

Does he do all grain? Syrups? Or a mix of both?

DH started with those Mr.Beer kits and now does all grain. Its really interesting but everytime I've tried to help I feel like I screw something up!

  • DHs splurges are guns, dirtbike stuff, and tools(he's a mechanic).

  • Computers and photography which are both expensive hobbies. We are also both cyclists (I do triathlons too) and so we both have a lot of bike gear. His computer and photography hobbies make it easier for me to not feel guilty spending $$ on crafts and CDs!

  • J makes knives, and likes buying tool and video games.

I prefer the video games, because the other two can get expensive! He needs a new machine/tool for his knife making that's going to cost $1800. Ugh, all I can say is I better get a sick kitchen set after we take the plunge.

  • He plays video games but gets them very cheap on Steam? Actually he hardly spends money on anything but food, thankfully, because I spend enough for the both of us!
  • All of DH's hobbies are splurges, lol.  I tease him because he's into electronics, photography, and astronomy...everything he likes is super expensive.  Right now, I'm into baking bread, so like $5 a week on flour and yeast, lol.
  • trains.

    *headdesk*

yep.  my husband plays with teeny tiny trains.

And they run $300ish per ... engine.  I shudder that I even know the correct terminology.

I've also poured $$$$$ into photography, but I've turned it around and into a part time business, so it's all good :)

  • My dh also plays video games. I don't mind too much anymore because my des plays with him :)

brewing beer? He likes to drink beer :) lol

  • Tools. He cannot for the life of him buy a cheap tool. Even if it's one he's only gonna use on the rare occasion. And he collects Beatles albums. Rare ones that are worth hundreds of $s. He tries to find them cheap, but usually he finds one he doesn't have in his collection for not so cheap and then he keeps thinking about it until he finally goes and buys it just to "complete" the collection.

  • DS just got his Crestron programming certification, so he's always buying "smart home" type electronics. It originally was supposed to be so he could test out the programs he had to write to get his certification, and he was going to sell what we didn't "need" for the house. Now he just keeps buying more stuff for the house, even though neither of us wants to live here more than 5 more years or so. It's annoying b/c he spends an inordinate amount of time (and money) programming and considering it working on the house when he really needs to get his behind up and finish the 80 little projects he's started (like crown moulding, etc). Plus it just makes it so complicated to try to even watch TV anymore. I read at bedtime now A LOT. I guess that's a silver lining. hmm

  • Golf...and wine.

  • Golf, which I don't mind because at least he's getting some exercise. But we recently bought a house that's a fixer upper and now his hobby is trying to singlehandedly increase Home Depot's stock price. So far there hasn't been much actual home improvement though, lol.
  • Videogames mainly. Also tools and crap for his car; it's just a Ford Fusion, but it seems like a never ending project for some reason. I don't think he can walk into a Canadian Tire (basically a WalMart for tools and car stuff for you Americans;) ) and leave without a tool or car part.

He makes pretty much whatever strikes his fancy at the time. He just started less than a year ago, so he's still refining the skill (and keeps pressing for the $1800 machine to make the blades better, ha), but he made and sold a few skinning (? <-- obviously not a hunter haha) knives to some hunter friends of his. Right now he's working on a machete for another friend. Sometimes he even just buys the blade already made and plays around with making the handles, which he's gotten REALLY good at.

I think we'd be pretty awesome. J would be the one killing the zombies, and I'd be the scavenger, repurposing everything into useful, life saving items.

Plus, I'd be handwashing our diapers and keeping our babies safe from the zombies. Hello -- sposies and the lingering smell would draw zombies RIGHT to us.

This is exactly my DH. Racing is a very expensive hobby. Specially when something breaks.

  • He used to race cars but in the last 5 yrs has shifted to racing dirt bikes. Car racing was way more expensive. I have sympathy for you gals. He also collects rare/limited beers. This is his newest hobby which started this past summer.

  • DH's splurges are skiing, golf, and video games.  Between work/new house/baby he doesn't get to spend much time doing any of those things so it feels like an indulgence when he gets to do them!

  • My H brews beer too! I used to help him when he used a Mr. Beer kit, but now he's doing mostly all grain and its all him. He asked for all kinds of gadgets for Christmas, like some kind of bottle washing thing.

his other hobby is woodworking, so that's an even more expensive hobby.
