GBS+ = no water birth?

is this a common thing or does this vary depending on your MWs??

Re: GBS+ = no water birth?

  • I could have sworn I was told in the beginning of my preganacy that if I tested GBS+ they actually recommend a water birth. Something about the water helping reduce the amount a bacteria the baby is exposed to. This probably varies by MW becuase I'm not sure how conclusive that information is.

  • My friend (same one I described in my response below regarding GBS) who had it also had a water birth at home. Baby was born in the amniotic sac too...that probably helped.

  • I was GBS+ last time around and my midwife said no reason not to, even with an IV if you have one.

  • Think it's mixed and dependant on your provider.

I'm in a UK territory, GBS+ and hoping for a hospital water birth this time (had homebirth in Canada with first).

My community MW (doesn't deliver at hospital) said depending on who is on shift I may have to fight for the birth pool with my GBS+ status.

  • Waterbirths actually decrease the risk of passing GBS to the baby.  Your MW should be encouraging it!

  • Are you having a hospital birth? They may try to discourage it because of the IV, however I think I read something about the water diluting the bacteria.

If you're getting trouble from your MW, ask about her reasoning and request to see the research to back it up.

  • I had LO at 35 weeks so I wasn't tested yet and they treated me as positive, but birthing in water was allowed. I couldn't though because I had pitocin.

  • I delivered my little girl into water 9 days with a GBS+ status. MW didn't see any issue. Good luck!

  • I was allowed to at my birthing center, and I didn't even have time to get the IV antibiotic - between the time I got there and he was born was less than 40 minutes.
