For my birthday I asked DH to get me the Wilton Ultimate Decorating Set and for my Christannukah present he signed me up for the Wilton Decorating Basics Course at Michaels. The first class is tomorrow night, so I opened up my set to wash it all and prep. Holy crap. There are 177 pieces in all these tiny plastic bags, so it took forever to open them all. And I have no clue what most of them are or do.

I know I'm not even going to be using all of them for this course, but still. I wish they'd at least labelled the bags so I knew what was what!

Haha...I was posting at the same time!
FUN! That set is huge! I would recommend getting a Wilton Yearbook (their yearly magazine available at Michaels and probably WM). It has a section that outlines all of their tools, even what the tips do. The Wilton site has it as well, but I found the magazine easier to look at.
I'm pretty sure that set has a lot of cutters, tools, etc for sugar flower making. That usually comes a ways down the decorating lane
If you have questions let me know!!
Oooh, good tip! I never even thought about checking out their website. I'll take a look at that and maybe pick up the magazine if I'm still confused.
There was one bag that was labelled as being for gum paste, so I know I'm not going near that stuff for a long time.
Other than that, I'm hoping the instructor doesn't mind me being a dunce and needing her to show me what the hell I'm supposed to be using along the way.
I'm really excited, and anticipating making a horrible mess tomorrow.

Have a blast! I do private lessons every now and again and it is my favorite thing ever. A few of my cake friends are Wilton Method Instructors and they are so patient, and really love teaching cake decorating!
Dammit! I wish I lived near you! I want Anasazi to teach me! That would be so awesome. Have I mentioned that I'm shy and self-conscious and am kind of scared of making a complete fool of myself at these classes? I'd much rather have lessons from you and Penny! That would be amazing!

For the cookies I brought 4in ones and they worked great. You are just going to decorate them, so have them be large enough to practice on. :
Thanks! That's really helpful to know about the cookies.
Penny, thanks again for your detailed info on what I should get. The kit just seemed like an easier option. I did save what you told me for future reference, though.

Just relax and have fun! Cake decorating really comes from experience, but just try to soak in everything they say and be willing to practice a lot. It's just frosting so don't feel bad about starting over. One of the biggest lessons I learned in decorating was to let the frosting lead and not the other way around, if that makes any sense. Holding the bag is a big part of it, too, just learning how much to push out.
The different tips might seem intimidating but they're really not. Some of them are just one-use things like the grassy looking one and then there are just a ton of sizes for the same kind of tip.
I miss decorating! I used to do it at one of my first kitchen jobs and I loved being able to get really into a cake. I did put the wrong name on one once. Whoops
