Peanut Butter poll

The food post below has me wondering how many people have given LO peanut butter.  My pedi is all hippie but not when it comes to peanut butter.  She said absolutely not until 2 but is pressuring us to wait until 3.  N is such a picky eater, giving him pb would be so easy and wonderful.  We don't have any food allergies so I'm surprised she's being so strict.

argh. The bump isn't letting me click on the poll tab.  I guess it's the old fashioned way: yes or no?

Re: Peanut Butter poll

  • Yes, although she doesn't get it all the time. Maybe 1or 2 times a week. We have no allergies in the family and pedi said it was ok at one year.

  • Our pedi suggested 15 months, but we give him a little here and there. He seems to like it especially pbj.

  • We started giving DS peanut butter right before his first birthday. We did it then so that if there was any reaction, we could talk to the pedi about it at our 1 year appointment.

  • Nora's had  PB just a few times, but she didn't seem to like it all that much.  I will probably just try to continue giving her some here and there to see if she likes it.  The first time she tried it was about a month ago.

  • No, but his doctor would be ok with it. We are a nut free household as I am allergic. We are giving him the fake soy stuff often, though.

  • C had an itty bitty taste and got a red rash around his lips and bum (on the way out).  Pedi suggests 18 months.  I agree with it being totally easy.  Luckily we are almost there.

  • Lily loves PB.  We were told the only food to avoid was honey.  A friend of mine is doing her residency in pediatrics and confirmed that holding off on peanut butter is really outdated.  The fact is that they have no clue what's going on with all the allergies and there's actually now more reason to believe that delaying too long increases the risk of allergies than giving it early.

  • Pedi gave us the go ahead at 1 year after Abby no longer had her dairy intolerance. She has maybe 1 tablespoon a week -- probably less than that, though. It's either in a PB sandwich or PB crackers.

  • Yes.  She gets it in small amounts once or twice a week.

  • We have given it to him! We started off small, by using the same knife to that we had use for peanut butter and then slowly started giving him a taste here and there! I was so nervous because I have a cousin who is allergic to nuts, fish, eggs and milk so I was paranoid!

  • So we're at 100% yes right now.  Argh. I don't understand.  I love, love, love peanut butter.  It was pretty much all I ate while pregnant.  She said there was a lot of new research to support the idea that introducing before 3 caused allergies to spike in 5-6 years old.  I'm torn and jealous.

  • The pedi we saw at her one-year appointment sounds like yours. She recommended 3-4 actually, but said it was more because of a choking hazard as opposed to an allergy thing. I'm not going to wait that long, but we haven't tried it yet. Maybe at her 18 month appointment I will let her try a pb cracker.

  • We were given the ok at a year since there is no history of nut allergies in either of our families. He loves a little on his pancakes in the morning.

  • We haven't yet. Our Pedi wants us to wait until two. I don't think I am going to wait that long though. The majority of doctors seem to say its safe to introduce at one, and we have no food allergies on either side of our family. We'll probably give him some in the next few months.
  • Yep.  He has had it a good bit of times.  My pedi had no problems with it after a year.  Today was his first official peanut butter & jelly sandwich.

  • NO!! DD is allergic, found this out last summer when I finally let her try it. Her lips blew up after a tiny taste and had to give Benadryl as per the pedi, then she had a bad reaction to the Benadryl. It was hell. We don't even have PB in our house so DS is definitely not trying it for a couple of years.

Neither DH or I have any allergies but both my kids have eczema and it is a precursor to allergies.

  • My Lo does get PB. I will put it on toast probably one a week. It is just a thin layer, nothing like what I put on my own.

  • Yes, DS is getting peanut butter. Your pedi is not up to date with AAP's recs and current research. Withholding peanut butter (or any allegenic food) will not keep your child from being allergic to said food. Either the child is allergic or they are not...period. Given this, we decided just to give DS peanut butter now.

ETA: The pedi also said that at his 1 year appointment that there were no more food restrictions for him.

  • LBB gets peanut butter, but not that often since I can't send him to school with it. So usually just on the weekends, unless it's an ingredient in dinner

  • Yes. E loves peanut butter. If I give it to her on crackers, she just licks it off and leaves the cracker behind.

  • After reading up on this for the last hour, I've decided that she told us to wait because we used donor sperm and while the donor said he had no allergies, who can be 100 certain. Maybe I'll call the bank tomorrow and ask how they confirm these things. We used the most expensive, best rated bank in the country for this very reason, to be sure we knew his history. Maybe my pedi is just being extra cautious because we never brought her the donors health history. I'm going to ask her for more info at this appointment on the 10th. Thanks!

  • In our practice, one pedi told us to wait and one said not to bother. Both kids eat PB regularly without issue.

  • We are waiting on PB and seafood not to avoid allergies but according to the Dr it is easier to intubate after 3. I also have several allergies.

  • I also believe some say to wait because your 1 year old can't explain themselves. My DD was able to tell me that it was " spicy on her tongue" as soon as she put it in her mouth. And Benadryl is usually the first step in relieving it and babies aren't supposed to have it.

If you are at all unsure then wait. It is just peanut butter, it isn't that big of a deal.

  • Our pedi actually gave DD pb on a cracker when we were in his office for her 12 month appointment because I mentioned I was nervous to give it to her.  She gets it about once a week now and loves it

You're right, it's really not that big of a deal in the big picture but he's a terribly picky eater and still in the 710th percentile for weight. Peanut butter seems to be in line with the other types of food he will eat and lunch time is so.damn.hard. peanut butter is full of fat and protein and way less expensive than an avocado every afternoon. My goto was scrambled eggs, when he wouldn't eat anything else, and now he won't eat those. I'm running out of ideas.

And I am a big whiner. Sorry :

  • DD eats PB probably once a week. She likes it. We gave it to her for the first time around 11 months.
  • My plan was to wait til she was two but she swiped some of her brothers PB toast a few months ago and loved it.  DS had a reaction to it at her age so I was a little paranoid it would happen again, and worse.  Luckily she hasn't had a reaction.

  • I started giving N peanut butter right after she turned 1. We have no family history of allergies and she loved it. Pedi okayed it after 1 so I didn't worry.

  • At our six month appointment, we didn't see the regular pedi. Sub pedi told us we could start peanut butter at that point. We started at sevenish months.

Then, at the nine month appointment, pedi asked why we had started so soon. Face Palm.

Oh well. We give it to her now and then with no problems.

  • We do PB even though my pedi said not until 2.  I tried it before I ever asked her and when I did mention she it she said not until 2 for allergy reasons.  At that point I already knew we didn't have a peanut allergy problem (at least for now) so I choose not to listen to the pedi on this one.  I did research on recommendations though about when to introduce certain foods and I didn't have a reason to wait so we tried it.  She loves PB!
