Hydronephrosis

Did any of your LO's have a diagnosis of hydronephrosis during prenatal US or after birth? I had an US yesterday (my first since 17 weeks) just to check fluid levels since I am past my due date. Everything was fine, but they did discover mild hydronephrosis of the left kidney. They just said that I would have to inform the pedi and he would have an US some time after birth (6 weeks). I felt okay about all of this, but Dr. Google is evil and talks about most babies needing preventative antibiotics until this followup US. Just checking if anyone has had any experience. I know it is probably nothing and hopefully self-resolving, but no one wants to hear of anything wrong with their baby.

Re: Hydronephrosis

  • My coworker's baby was diagnosed with this!  She was Team Green and REALLY wanted a girl.  But I guess it's way more common in boys?  So then she was sad she was having a boy, but also sad about this diagnosis.  She has obviously come around (had her baby last May) and the issue resolved on its own.  No antibiotics needed.

She found out about it at like 12 weeks?  It was before the anatomy scan, b/c they went back for it - she had to know since she already figured it was a boy.

  • I dont have personal experience with this, but when my SIL was pregnant with my nephew, they said he had that.

It actually turned out to be false, when he was born.  He didn't have it at all.  Not saying this is always the case, but she was scared shi*less half her pregnancy and nothing was ever wrong.

  • My DD had a UTI when she was 6 months old (January of last year) and was diagnosed with hydronephrosis and subsequently urinary reflux (March of last year). In our case, since she had already had a UTI, there was talk of putting her on an antibiotic regimin (to hopefully prevent further infections).

Before doing that, we had a DMSA scan performed to determine if the UTI had caused any kidney scarring. The scan came out clear with no evidence of scarring and the pediatric urologist agreed that we did not need to put her on antibiotics provided that we were more cautious about fevers with her (e.g. bring her to the doctors immediately if there were no other obvious cause for the fever).

She has thankfully continued to be UTI-free for over a year. We'll take her back this summer for a follow up visit with the urologist.

I'm guessing (hopefully at least!) that as long as you're careful about fevers that you'll be able to bypass the antibiotics at least until the ultrasound.

  • I don't remember if they ever used that actual word, but at our a/s they said that they needed to keep an eye on his kidneys because one (or both...I can't remember) was looking a little swollen. They checked again at our overdue ultrasound, and said it was still looking just a little swollen. It never came to be a major issue, though. The midwife said that it was something that pops up fairly frequently, but it is rarely something major. She did mention that we would need to make sure that he peed shortly after birth. And he did, so it was all good. He didn't have antibiotics or a follow-up ultrasound or any of that.

  • My nephew was diagnosed with that around 30 weeks.  They did an ultrasound a few weeks after birth and it was completely resolved.  Try not to worry!  It's common!

  • Thanks for all of the info. I am really not stressed at all yet, but I just needed a bit of stories from the gang. I am sure that it will turn out to be nothing.
