Antibiotic side affects..

DD has another double ear infection.  The last one she had was a month ago and they put her on Amoxicillian (sp?) and she did fine with it.  Well they put her on a stronger one this time around Augmentum (sp?) and she had her first dose this morning and I checked in with daycare and she was hyterical crying in the background (not like her at all).  They said she's had two loose poopy diapers and she's been super fussy all morning.  She only took 5oz of her bottle which is also unlike her.  Anyone have issues with Augmentum?  I have a call into the dr to see if she just needs to deal with it or if they can change it to something else.  I feel so bad.  Trying to get out of work early so I can just cuddle her.

Re: Antibiotic side affects..

  • We had five different rounds of anitbitics before we ended up with tubes....god bless america!  Anyway...the augmentin is hard on their stomachs so you should try to get a probiotic in her....either by suppliment or I fed my son the oatmeal with probiotics.  He wouldn't eat yogurt.  Also make sure to give it to her with food.   We also gave him tylenol regularly because it takes a while for the meds to kick in so they are still in pain...hence maybe why she wont eat....the swallowing might be bother her ears.  My son acted the same way with the eating when he had ear infections.  Have you tried giving her ibprophin or tylenol for the discomfort?  My son also had mild diarrhea but it went away after s couple of days.  Just make sure you are staying on top of the diaper rash....the antibiotics can cause diaper rash along with the diarrhea so as long as you stay ahead of it you can keep it under control.

GL!  ear infections are the devil!  :)

  • Amoxicillin and Augmentin did not work for us. Zithromax did. They gave him bad diarrhea. He had a terrible rash despite loads of Desitin. We had to get some Triple Paste, which really helped.

  • I have two kids and both have had bad ears. My 8 month old is going through it again now. First give the meds 48-72 hours to take affect, her ears are still hurting. 1) dont lay her flat if she is awake always put her in a bouncer or swing since the pressure of laying down hurts - make sure daycare knows that. 2) the loose stool is  normal. (as mentioned above) GET THE FLORSTOR FOR KIDS. Its a miracle. One packet in the morning and one at night in the bottle. I could only find the tutty fruity flavor and it my daughter took it fine. You can get it at Walgreens or at target, but at Target its behind the pharmacy counter. Also make sure to give her IBprof the first 48 hours of being diagnosed. These are my check lists, hope they help your little one :)
  • DS is on amoxcillian for a double ear infection and our pedi recommended giving yogurt before the meds to avoid upsetting his tummy.  Also got a super red rash.  Hope you LO feels better soon!
