Weaning a toddler at bedtime

-->

Hi ladies,

My 2 yo still nurses at bedtime (this is the only time each day she nurses) and I'd like to wean her from this.  I've put her to bed every night in this way for the past two years and I'd like to start having some freedom and allow someone else to put her to bed.  She's able to put herself to sleep and stay asleep at nap time for other caretakers, so I know she can do this.  She's quite spirited and stubborn, so I may be in for a fight.  Does anyone have any tricks to weaning at this age?

  • I would encourage you to be patient.  Start talking to her about the change, and maybe even get a small amount of her input on how you'll do it.  Maybe you can switch out that nursing session for another one when she wakes up?  Or nurse her before you leave for an activity?  I don't think you have to entirely give up the nursing session as a whole if you just want to get out at night once or twice a week.

  • DD nurses to sleep when I put her to bed but DH puts her to bed once a week and she's never had any issues going to bed for him. Maybe see if you DH can get her to go to sleep? DD's on a floor bed so DH lies on the bed with her and she snuggles to sleep.

  • Thanks, ladies.  DH tried putting LO to bed over the weekend in a similar way (lying on the floor, rubbing her back), and she just screamed for me until I gave in.  I don't even need one night a week off--I'm just hoping to be able to be away at bedtime a couple of times a year!  I know it won't last forever, so maybe I'll just just stick with the routine until she weans herself.

    This. I can't be in the house though. If Ro knows I am home she wants to nurse and she will nurse. End of discussion. If she knows I am not home, it's not an issue. Maybe try just going out.

  • Yup.  We didn't fully have daddy as the go-to guy until I had to be out of the house one night.  After that, we established a somewhat new routine - I nurse her, stay a bit, then DH takes the monitor and responsibility.  I generally do leave the house (to take the dog for a walk) still, but mostly by choice.  We try to make her know that I am out, or very not available.

    This makes sense.  DH does nap on Mondays and Fridays when I am at work and he never has any major problems.  Thanks ladies.
