Another vote for backyard chickens dot com. We're getting our first chicks in March. DH is crazy excited.
I'm excited too, but cautiously optimistic. I will love having fresh, organic eggs. But I worry that the chickens will either die from some disease or get killed by the coyotes. And I'm also concerned about how we'll care for them if/when we ever want to go away for a few days.
We have had our chickens for almost 2 years and they are as much pets as they are production animals. We have 4 Cochin Bantams and one Barred Rock and they are great! Here is a video from last June of our DD sining to them
Re: chickens
backyardchickens dot com! This is a forum board and very addicting.
Storey's Guide To Raising Chickens (book) has very practical info about care and needs.
I love my chickens!
Good luck

But...it will be fun. I'm looking forward to it.
