June 2013 Moms

Canadian moms

Anyone else getting sick of our limited selection when it comes to furniture, maternity clothing, and other baby gear? I keep clicking on the links other ladies are posting about cute bedding, cribs, etc., and none of it is available here.

I got so excited when I saw a post earlier today about an Old Navy sale, but the Canadian website has no maternity! Grrr...

Re: Canadian moms

  • Yes, this is highly annoying. There are really no stores here that sell decent maternity wear - I still have not one single item. The Bay, Sears, Walmart have all let me down. Seems like there is nothing but those trendy little hole in the wall specialty stores seem to carry what I need, and those items cost a small fortune :(

  • Here in Ottawa Old Navy sells maternity clothing. A small selection.

I don't understand why American distributors won't ship to Canada in this day and age! Bah...

  • I'm not finding a problem. I've found lots of cute clothes at Old Navy, H and M, and Thyme and they were all on sale. Plus the American Old Navy website does ship to Canada.

You must be in a larger city than me--maybe I'll take a look at the Old Navy and H&M when I'm Calgary this weekend. I miss living in Toronto! :(

  • I have a small maternity section at H&M, otherwise I've been shopping online. I've purchased several outfits from zulily, and also the UK websites: www.asos.com www.next.co.uk and www.newlook.com

     Shipping is decent.. good luck.

I'm a canadian who moved to the US a few years ago DH is American I would just like to say count your blessings you are having a baby in Canada! I get that the gear/clothes may not have as many options but looking at the bigger picture I'd love to be in your shoes. You have a propper mat leave which I wont here 3 months is not a propper mat leave, if you choose to deliver in hospital you will be delivering in the Canadian health care system which is ranked much high than the US anytime multiple countries are compared. Your children gets to go through the Canadian school system which, like both countriesnbsp;health care systems, is far from perfect but again ranks well above the US.
Can you tell I'm not overjoyed about starting my family in the US? I dont dislike living here and the people are wonderful my DH included! but honestly given a choice I'd skip the cute clothes andnbsp;be having/raising this child in Canada.

True! I'm so happy I'm a Canadian because we get awesome mat leave and we don't have to worry about the hospital bill after delivering baby.

Agreed. With DS I got a full year of maternity leave plus 3 months of sick leave. I didn't go back to work after so I won't get money this time but I'm thankful that I won't have a hospital bill after I have my baby.

This. You raise a very good point!  Perspective, thanks. I will take being off for a year paid and not be stuck with a bill when baby arrives over cute ANYTHING.

This really put things in perspective! I do feel blessed to be having my baby here, and to have access to such amazing publicly-funded medical care and wonderful schools.

All the best to you and your family in the US.

  • We live in Canada... everyone knows that it's too cold to reproduce, hence why Canadian women do not require maternity selections in stores :P
"What are you having?" "Well the radiologist says its a healthy little human baby. I'm a little disappointed, because I really wanted a puppy." LOL
  • I live in a small city (pop~ 200,000) and the old navy here has a small maternity selection. It was hard to find because it is so small, but it was there. I also drove to Edmonton over Christmas and got quite a bit of stuff from h & m. Thyme has some decent stuff but it is expensive when it's not on sale.

I am also excited to have a year off... Although I will miss the extra $$.
