Background: DS2 turned 3 in October and I have been trying since then to get him enrolled in the school, IEP set up, etc. During the 1st IEP meeting, when the nut allergy was brought up it was stated he will need an IHP.
In trying to set up the IHP (meeting with principal, preschool teacher, and school nurse), the principal stated that no one seems to know where to put the nut allergy info. The RN for the district states it does not go on an IHP and that it goes on a 504; the principal states they don't have a 504 and an IEP** and that it doesn't go in the IEP. **I thought you could have an IEP and a 504 at the same time - true or not?
The principal stated that we can create the wording and it will get put into whatever document it needs to be put into - once they are told which document to put the info in. Does this make sense?
I'm in the process of listening to the tape recorded meeting but just started listening to it. From memory, we had plans of action for cafeteria and classroom regarding nuts. Cafeteria is that 3 seats all around DS2 would be nut free (if having to sit at the same table) and that in the classroom DS2 and anyone eating anything with nuts would be in different parts of the room (eating in the classroom is rare). Both situations it was included that those students who had a nut product would wash their hands with soap and water (and wash their face should there be smeared PB on it for instance) prior to rejoining the class. There may have been more set up but I can't remember offhand anything else.
So....where does nut allergy (and the corresponding plan of action) go? IHP, 504, or IEP? My thinking is that the food allergy is a medical issue since it requires him to have an EpiPen Jr and it should be included in an IHP. I've never done this before so I really have no idea.
Sorry this is long!
Re: IHP question (long and may be confusing)
Does this sound right (from later on in the tape recording): Principal was told that if it is a doctor's order (nut free area in the cafeteria) that the information can go into the IHP otherwise the nut info would go into the medical narrative portion of the IEP.
Just want to make sure things are done the right way. Thanks again for any help you can provide.
